"I wasn't mind of you paying last respects to fallen comrades," said Volodja. "But I am worried about you and Kaj and your feelings towards your former compatriots who are now turned themselves against every living creature, except Mutants. Any hesitation in battle might be fatal and I don't want that to happen. And I don't want you to become killers as well. Just let me explain, please. I guess I told you, how I shot my first two men - actually they were two marodeurs who burned people alive for fun - when I was a teenage officer leading a squad of teenage soldiers. I wanted to spare my boys from the fate of becoming ruthless killers if they had to shoot unarmed men. Only excuse for a soldier to kill someone is in the battle and for self defence. That's why I had to shot those scum bags myself, so my boys could stay to be soldiers, instead of becoming killers. And now I am ready to deal with Mutants single handedly if it's needed. I know that you are soldiers, but this is going to be a massacre, so I tried to protect you from turning into butchers. My conscious is quite flexible - it shows up only before or after the fight, not during one. Usually it goes that way. But I can't expect rest of the people to be like me. Killing those Mutants is unfortunately only way to get rid of them and I wanted to spare you two from doing that as much as possible. I am on my way to Hell anyway. Best I can do, is avoid dragging others along with me. Especially my friends and the girl I love." Volodja smiled sadly. Good intentions sometimes bring along misunderstandings. Better clear them at once, because there was a battle ahead. Anything could happen to him and last thing in his mind was leaving a bad memory about himself. He wasn't ready to die, but just in case he had to tie up all lose ends. That's how he was used to do before every scouting mission to the rear of enemy - he said something to remember for the rest of the squad who didn't went to the mission, left his documents and decorations behind and when all was said and done, then and only then, he went to the mission.

Sandy Bell narrowed her baby blue eyes, trying to pierce the darkness as Sarge, her EGO psyche, kept an eye on her EGO radar to warn of any approaching problem. She thought it was sweet that Volodja was trying to keep her from being a "killer," but all veteran soldiers already were, no matter what their cause. She remembered her instructor in officer candidates school paraphrasing General Patton, telling her that her job was NOT to die for her country, but to make sure the enemy died for his. Up until the time Sandy "died" for the EMC during her sabotage mission, she had done a very good job of doing just that during the Pale Wars.
Still looking into the dark, Sandy answered in a whisper to Volodja, "I'm not terribly religious, but if you are on your way to Hell, well, I'm damned straight going with you! As I said, I love you, and now that we are finally together, you aren't getting rid of me that fucking easy!" Then Sandy grinned over her shoulder at him, saying in a hushed tone, "Besides, I hear they throw better parties in Hell!"

Volodja lowered his sniper rifle, turned his face towards Sandy's and whispered: "I love you and I want to be with you. And I am thinking on how to avoid casualties among us, so we can be together and do those things that lovers do, instead of fighting. And it's not a defeatist behaviour, but a wish to end this crusade successfully and kiss the war goodbye." Then he kissed Sandy on her sweet lips and started to think about the battle situation. Soon he smiled at his sudden thought, but went serious at once, and said: "You know what I hate about Inquisitors? They always try to hide themselves behind other's backs. Now they surrounded themselves with Mutants, so they don't have to make their own hands dirty. I believe that their prisoners are carefully locked up, so I have a tiny idea about stepping down to Inquisitors level. We should break the door, let the Mutants in and wait a bit. I could say that I don't think that we are taking advantage of Mutants that way. Instead I could claim that Mutants deserve their chance to get even with Inquisitors who used them as a living barricade and we are here to provide them with the chance to fight and die for the right cause once again. It's practical for sure. It will increase our chances to liberate prisoners, destroy drugs and meet less resistance during that, because we have to fight only with survivors, but what about the ethic side of that idea? Seems to be fair to them, because we are about to slay those Muties anyway, but it might only seem to be fair. See, how cunning I can be. Suggesting to wait at leisure while the enemy labors, as "Thirty-Six Stratagems" - an ancient Chinese essay, used to illustrate a series of stratagems used in politics, war, and civil interaction - teaches us to do. According to that book it is an advantage when you can choose the time and place for battle. In this way you know when and where the battle will take place, while your enemy does not. Encourage your enemy to expend his energy in futile quests while you conserve your strength. When he is exhausted and confused, you attack with energy and purpose. When the going gets tough, should we play rough? From tactical point of view it seems to be a promising idea." Suddenly he became even more serious and said after some more thinking: "But everything I just planned might be just another example of wishful thinking of mine. Things are never that simple. I am sorry because I disappointed you again, Sandy, with the false hopes to get it over faster and with less effort. My plan would fail anyway as they usually do. Guess we will have to wait for the better plan from better mind than mine can ever be."

"No, that sounds like a great idea Volodja, although I don't know if it will work in a bunker like this or not. I've never been to Alcatraz before, but if it can work down here, it sure would save us on bullets!" Sandy Bell grinned at him taking his hand once more, "And I gather Vo is new to this whole command thing, so I bet he would welcome any input, especially from someone as well-read as yourself who has tons of experience too!"
Sandy pulled Volodja over to Vo Kshaa, then told Vo verbatim Volodja's idea, then proudly stating, "It wasn't a mistake when they put Volodja as one of the command triumvirate at Fortress Kshaa," Then adding with a frown, "But I sure is one of they don't reinstate him in command. Just saying!"
Then Sandy gave Volodja's hand a loving squeeze, before leaving the two men to converse as she went back to sentry duty. When she was an EMC captain, she never felt comfortable in command, but both men seemed to take to it naturally. Back during the Pale Wars, she would just take on the hazardous task rather then assign it to her subordinates, which always got her master sergeant mad at her. She much preferred being a grunt, willing to take on death but not willing to send anybody in her place.
Sandy sidled up to Kaj, as the big Bio-man was staring down the tunnel just like she was, their weapons at the ready. As she did so, Sandy whispered to him, "It's quiet out there - too quiet," Then Sandy gave Kaj a sidewise glance of her twinkling blue eyes while a grin crossed her pretty tan face as she added in a hushed tone, "I always wanted to say that!"

As Volo told his tactical ideas, Vo caught himself smiling.
"That's crazy", Vo answered, "And I like it."
He gathered his small team and said, "Okay team, new plan. Once we open the next door, target the captains and only them. Once the captains are dead, get into the room and hide. I'll lure all the other mob outside and then I'll rush in myself. Close and lock the door behind me. This way we'll keep the angry mob of mutants behind the locked doors. Mutants without their captains will attack anyone who's not them, including Inquisitors. So what we'll do next is to open the door to where Inquisitors reside, then open the previous door which keeps mutants behind. And then we hide and wait for them to fight each other and then finish off survivors. Volo, I think Sophie is capable enough to hack the door locking system and control it. Sandy, your part is the same — slow down all the mutants with your Corruptor so I would be able to lure them out and then get back in. I'll sent a message to Midget to lock the front door so that the deranged mutants could not come out of the bunker as well."
Having said that, Vo led the team through the tunnel to the next door. Vo pointed at the metal crates and lockers which was standing along the tunnel and could serve as cover.
"Okay team, take your positions. I'll open the door when you're ready."

Kaj looked down at Sandy, smiled broadly, and chuckled quietly as he whispered, "My Little Surfer, It is always quiet before the storm. Perhaps we just need an epic coat, so we look good as we kick butt."
Then Sandy talked quietly to Volo as Kaj continued to watch their surroundings. Next Sandy and Volo told Vo of Volo's plans.

"Thank you Sandy and Vo for believing in me," said Volodja. "But I can't allow Vo to take a risk of getting killed because of my plan. I'd rather go to that deadly tag play myself. After all - I am good at running as you all have noticed already." Volodja grinned at that self ironic remark before continuing:
"Among my other qualities is readiness of getting my own hands dirty if it's necessary. Back my active duty days I never put a single man through anything I wasn't willing to try myself and I don't see any reason why Vo has to endanger himself and thus the rest of our group. He is the mission leader and I am a military advisor, so he can't take the unnecessary risks when he had two groups of fighters, depending on his skills to lead the battle as whole. And that DOESN'T mean hiding behind other's. He has to coordinate our actions and that's much harder task than dodging bullets and avoiding getting cornered by Muties. If you are worrying about my possible suicidal thoughts and urges then believe it or not, but I am motivated to stay alive, return home and dance the Victory polka. But it just a suggestion that I should go instead of Vo."

"Sandy," Said Sarge, her EGO psyche, in concern, "You are going to want to see this!" Sandy Bell focused on her EGO radar, the furthest point in the circle almost a solid red as opposed to the individual red dots for enemies usually displayed there, and the crimson wave was headed in her direction. Sandy decided now was a good time for silence, so she communicated to the others via her EGO as well as whispered in alarm to Kaj, "Guys, somebody needs to do something, as the natives are getting restless!" Sandy slung her SMG Pulser and unslung her corrupter detonator, ready to do as Vo ordered when he ordered, and hoping it would work. She was pretty sure she could slow some of the mutants down, but with a mass that big, it was inevitable that some might get through. "I'll cross that bridge when I get to it," Thought Sandy to herself. Meanwhile in Volodja's EGO, Sarge quickly transported himself to Sophie's Boggetta, took her into his arms, and with a dramatic dip worthy of a Forties' movie couple, kissed her passionately on the lips, whispering before he disappeared back to Sandy's EGO, "Just in case one or the other of us don't make it back."

Sophie gulped. Sophie sighed. Sophie blushed. Sophie felt dizzy and tingling. Sophie almost fainted... And Sophie pulled herself together again and said most determining manner: "We all are going home. Right?" "Absolutely," replied Volodja to Sophie. "Do I hear excitement in your voice?"
"Mmmmaybe. Just stay alive and keep Mi...Sar...I mean Sandy alive as well."
_______________________
"Step aside, sister," said Tony the Bat to Sandy and pulled the starter rope of his chainsaw. "It's harvest time. Just give me few shots with your detonator to slow these guys down." Then he explained: "Using a mass attack is a damn mistake. Those Mutants are going to block each other way and won't let others to get decent aim on us. Best way to take them down is hand in hand combat. I will cut the pathway through them and whoever is going to lure these folks after himself, better start running as soon as I have cleared the path. Let the game begin! Level one!" And Tony the Bat rushed forward after Vo'Kshaa gave an order and Sandy Bell's well placed shots took down several attacking Mutant captains. Volodja's sniper rifle accompanied Sandy's weapon. Their duet created quite a mess among approaching Mutants. Others joined in and their concentrated fire enabled Tony the Bat and his chainsaw to meet the Mutants and establish a close contact. And then there were only sound of the saw, screams on mutated (and mutilated) soldiers and officers and splattering blood all around. "Whoever is going to run to the next door, better do it NOW!" shouted Tony. "I can't keep them busy forever!"

Vo sighed thinking this commanding thing was damn tiresome. In addition to having to think for all the team members' roles in the battle, he could not even assign himself a task which he usually does best — making the mob of angry enemies or a single but powerful enemy running in circles following him so that everyone else could dispatch all the enemies one by one. This time his job was going to consist of mostly watching the battle and supporting his team mates. "How does Taffer endure it all the time?" He thought with a bit of envy of his friend who seemed to take leadership naturally whenever it was needed. But also he knew Volo was right and he had to assign the most dangerous task to someone else but himself, while keeping tabs on what would be happening around and assuring everyone's survival, including Volo's.
"Okay Volo, so you're going deadly tag play", Vo replied, "I'm hacking and controlling the door. And don't you dare to choose those muties' company rather than ours, there's someone to be very jealous among us." Vo nodded at Sandy and at that very moment Sandy informed them of the upcoming danger.
"No more talking. Take your positions!" Vo shouted and engaged the hacking protocol to get the access to the gate control. The way mutants tried to open the door from the inside the room was actually working to his benefit as Shirra cycled between all the security protocols, making mutants to "tell" all of their codes before she allowed the door to open. Once the door started to slide Vo jumped back to cover and watched his team at work. Sandy did a good job at slowing down the main group. Tony was actually too fast on getting into the melee rang, making all others' detonators useless as they had to avoid friendly fire.
"Kaj! pistol only! Until Tony is out of the firing line!" Vo commanded, changing his Milking Maid for the Pulser and aiming carefully.
As Volodja and Sandy eliminated the captains which created a real mess in the mutants' ranks, the puddle of biological substance Sandy spread at the door dissipated, and Tony created a preach in the mutants' formation, Vo commanded:
"Volo, lure the mutants away! Sandy, stay at the door and wait for Volo to return! Everyone else, get into the room and secure it!"
Once the team was inside the room previously occupied by mutants and Volo led the remaining ones the way the team came in, Tony and Kaj eliminated the ones who remained in the room and Vo stayed at the door with Sandy watching Volo at his work.
As they saw Volo returning with the mob of mutants still close behind him, Vo commanded Sandy to apply more biological grenades on them to slow the mutants down and when Volo jumped into the room they gathered in, Vo shut the door right between him and the remaining group of mutants.
"Nice work team", Vo complimented his group.
"Vo, someone is using the reserve control contour on the door to which I don't have access to! Careful Vo, they are coming!" Shirra's voice sounded in his head.
Vo turned his head to the direction Shirra pointed and the first thing he saw when the door slammed open was a glowing Protection Spike being deployed. Next thing appearing was an ugly-looking heavy armored mutant with a shotgun in his face. Another squad of mutants poured into the room right behind his back. This time Vo decided to act before filing commands. He engaged Blur, a power he was best at using and zigzagged right to the mutant, his EGO conveniently engaging a Sonic Strike perk as he moved. The mutant moved rather sluggishly in his armor so it was no surprise he missed trying to shoot Vo with his shotgun. Vo jumped up to the mutant and crashed the butstock of his detonator at the mutant's face and quickly rolled away, making the shotgunner even angrier and focus on him.
"Volo, once my Blur fades, engage this shotgunner to follow you", Vo commanded, "Once my power recharges, I'll make him follow me again. We'll keep him confused and switching between us until he's the last enemy standing! Everyone else — get all other mutants out of the spike's range and kill them!"

After listening to the different issues at hand, Vo issued the orders. "Okay Volo, so you're going deadly tag play", Vo replied, "I'm hacking and controlling the door. And don't you dare to choose those muties' company rather than ours, there's someone to be very jealous among us." "Kaj! pistol only! Until Tony is out of the firing line!" Vo commanded, changing his Milking Maid for the Pulser and aiming carefully.
Kaj pulled out his epic El Presidente converted to rad nano and started placing well-aimed shots on the mutants. As he radiated the mutants, Tony would quickly step in and finish the glowing baddies off.
As Volodja and Sandy eliminated the captains which created a real mess in the mutants' ranks, the puddle of biological substance Sandy spread at the door dissipated, and Tony created a breach in the mutants' formation with Kaj's rad shots helping soften them up, Vo commanded:
"Volo, lure the mutants away! Sandy, stay at the door and wait for Volo to return! Everyone else, get into the room and secure it!"
Once the team was inside the room previously occupied by mutants and Volo led the remaining ones the way the team came in, Kaj switched to his epic Bio Accelerated Surge Mk I. Then Tony and Kaj eliminated the ones who remained in the room and Vo stayed at the door with Sandy watching Volo at his work.
As Kaj took the tiny downtime to reload his guns, he gave Vo a almost imperceptible nod of agreement.
Just then Vo turned his head to a specific direction and the first thing he saw when the door slammed open was a glowing Protection Spike being deployed. Next thing appearing was an ugly-looking heavy armored mutant with a shotgun in his face. Another squad of mutants poured into the room right behind his back. Kaj followed Vo's gaze and saw the same thing.
Kaj smiled behind his helmet and said in his deep tone, but sounded extra menacing from him considering his predilection for Pacifism, "Lock and load, baby!"
Then he pulled out his Epic EXL Deadly Detonator. He fired it at the spike and as the rounds exploded near it, the mutants got startled at the sudden explosions and ran out of the spike's protective circle to avoid the explosions. Once they had scattered around the room and away from the Protective Spike, Kaj switched back to his Epic Bio Accelerated Surge Mk I. Even though he was a pacifist most of the time, one could tell that his military training and combat (genetic) programming kicked in, and he was in his element and despite his dislike of killing he was of course great at it, as he was genetically designed specifically for that type of thing.

"Volo, once my Blur fades, engage this shotgunner to follow you. Once my power recharges, I'll make him follow me again. We'll keep him confused and switching between us until he's the last enemy standing! Everyone else — get all other mutants out of the spike's range and kill them!" was Vo's command right before he turned into faded light blue silhouette and started to run. According to the battle situation Volodja had to keep his eyes on him and the Mutant shotgunner so he could plug himself into the battle as a diversion. But yet he had time to reflect his dodge and evade run when he lured mutants after him. These kind of reflections are usually fast. Only describing them will take time... ...Rugby football (supposedly related withRoman harpastum or Greek episkyros) wasn't exactly Volodja's game. He preferred chess and if he had to move on the field, then tennis would have been his his first choice. But there wasn't a chance to play his games with Mutants, so Rugby it was. At least there was a chance to play the Rugby by his rules, because he was the moving ball and everyone else on the field tried to stop from reaching him to his destination. All he needed was a damn good coordination, steady feet, calm calculative mind and lot of luck. He rushed towards the exit and Mutants run after him. Moving target gets instinctively most of attention even among Mutants, so it was natural that they started to follow. Speed was essential at this stage of the chase - if he runs too fast, then Mutants will give up turn back. If he is too slow then he will be caught and eliminated with extreme prejudice. "More power to my rear, Sophie dear," he asked. "Don't want to get shot into..."
"Will be done. STOP!" warned Sophie, his EGO psyche. Volodja followed her command and hit his imaginative breaks just on time to see how two Cleavers who were right behind him - one on his left the other on his right side - jumped forward to tackle him in the spot where he was supposed to step next. Since their target refused to fulfil their expectation, those eager Cleavers ended up on the floor because they managed to tackle each other instead of Volodja. Volodja jumped over their fallen bodies and run forward , dodging bullets fro behind. Running and shooting and shouting at the same time end up with bad aiming, although it could make things more complicated as well, because you can't even predict where the next shot will go and instead avoiding bullet, one might easily jump in front of it.
As a next thing Volodja ducked instinctively and more felt than saw how burst of bullets flew over him. Never underestimate your your battle trained instincts. They might save your life or get you killed but usually it's the former and this time wasn't an exception. Volodja stormed forward again. And then made a little sidestep to the left to let some Mutants by and see how they formed a pile of screaming, cursing and struggling bodies. The closed exit was right ahead. Only few steps left. And Mutants were right behind Volodja again... When he finally lead most of Mutants between two doors - one already locked, the other one soon be locked, then Volodja turned around, switched on his Blur power and made his way back. Now he had to hurry to reach to the next door long before mutants, so Vo could close the door behind him and leave Mutants trapped until they were needed again. Speed was essential, so Volodja ignored thumps and screams, caused by Mutants who stormed against the closed exit and could not stop on time. Once again rushing in quantities proved to be useful tactics...for Volodja, because Mutants were struggling between themselves once again, instead of chasing him right away. The edge of the phalanx formation lasts only while phalanx is solid and advancing in steady pace. It's weakness hides in poor manoeuvrability, weak wings and rear and in problems keeping the formation together. Phalanx was effective against similar formation, but has difficulties against weaker but more manoeuvrable units just like Volodja was. Ha had more liberty to move than the mass of Mutants who followed him and since he he was aware of his edge, he managed to complete his distracting manoeuvre unharmed and uncaught. Except when his Blur faded off and tiredness took over, enabling Mutants to catch up with him again, but Sandy's biogrenades slowed them down enough. and Vo closed the door right after Volodja's big leap through the doorway. That stage was successfully completed, but... ...But another door was suddenly opened, letting out new bunch of Mutants, and they had another "catch me if you can" task ahead. Volodja was a bit tired after his long run, so as soon Vo's Blur fade off and Volodja had to get that shotgunner to follow him, he hid himself behind crates, released Decoy and caught some breath, watching how shotgunner furiously attacked his Decoy instead of the Real McCoy, giving Vo some time to recharge his powers. After catching a breath Volodja jumped out again, giving that shotgunner an opportunity to choose between similar targets. Ha had to do few evasive moves more until Vo was ready to take over again enabling Volodja to regain his strength for awhile and watching others backs. Especially Sandy's, and in her case Volodja kept his eye not only her back but on rest of her as well, while Sophie did her best to help Shirra - Vo's EGO psyche - to resume the control over the door locking mechanisms.

Sandy Bell had switched from her detonator to her Pulser SMG, realizing that the team was too spread out to risk using explosives at this point, so as Vo ordered, she was picking off with short bursts any mutants that ventured too close to the protection spike. She wasn't sure if the operation was still going off as planned ever since Tony the Bat made his melee charge, but then, "What plan does five minutes after a battle begins?" She thought to herself. Suddenly a mutant's cleaver went flying over Sandy's shoulder from in back of her but as she glanced at her EGO radar seeing a red dot in back of her, something hit her painfully in the back of her neck before she could turn and shoot. Sandy then did turn and shoot the mutant with cleavers again in both hands that had attacked her from behind, killing himm in a spray of bullets. She reached and felt the back of her neck, feeling something wet and sticky, realizing she was bleeding. "Damn berserker mutants and their cleavers," Sandy thought to herself, then asked Sarge, her EGO psyche, "How bad is it?" When Sandy didn't get an answer from Sarge, she realized her EGO radar was out, and then was shocked when she made a further realization, thinking with a gasp, "I'm bleeding right where my EGO was implanted!"

"I am sticking with you, Sandy," muttered Volodja after devastated sounding Sophie informed him that Sandy's EGO was out. "You are the glue and I am the paper." And he jumped out from his hiding spot, rolled behind Sandy and covered with his body and shield. Since he was less moving target, he could act like a living bullet proof vest for Sandy. "No sudden moves, my love," Volodja warned. "We will take a look at your wound as soon we have a break and they have to tore me away from you now." He kept covering Sandy while Kaj and Tony finished off the rest of the Mutants and Vo took care of the shotgunner. "Don't you dare to pass out, soldier," said Volodja, tears in his brown eyes. "That's an order! Don't you dare to leave me now. I can't order you to do that but I beg you! Fight! And let me see that EGO implant of yours. Usually they are quite solid. It might be just a temporary knock out."

When Belle Starr drove into Fortress Kshaa, she checked in and gave a situation report to Atticus over her EGO, then headed to the room she shared with Vo Kshaa, wondering along the way how his mission was going and hoping it was better than hers had. Suddenly, her hailer began it's refrain, of "Everything is Awesome," so she glanced at who it was from, and seeing it was from Trevor Tyler from the VBI Board of Directors, she quickly answered it. "Hi Trevor!" Belle began with some trepidation in her voice, knowing what she was about to hear but still dreading hearing it, "What's the board say?... They want me in Boston how soon?... Holy crap-on-a-stick - oh, sorry Trevor, but to get there by then I'll have to leave by today!... oh, you have a plane coming to fetch me how - neighborly!" Said Belle, thinking it was anything but, "Y'all know I'll have to come back for Lady's judicial hearings right?... You'll have a plane at my disposal 24/7, okay, and the search will continue for Chase?... Okay then, y'all have a new Vice President of Public Relations I reckon! I and Vo will be headed out there as soon as he gets back!... Well, y'all didn't think I'd leave my significant other, did you?... He'll adjust to city life just fine, don't you worry!... Y'all have a brownstone near VBI headquarters all rented and furnished for me, well, isn't that sweet? I can't wait to see it! Thank y'all kindly Trevor!... See you soon! Bye!" As Belle arrived to the door to her and Vo's quarters, she began to feel a tightness in her chest, and began gasping for air. She quickly ushered herself into the room so no passersby could see her predicament, closing the door behind her with her back against it as she slid to the floor. She began the counting exercises that she had been taught by her friend, and slowly the panic attack began to subside until her breathing was back to normal. "I should be happy about this! Moving up the ranks of VBI is a dream come true, isn't it? It's what I always wanted, it's why I formed the team in the first place to help me achieve," Thought Belle to herself. remembering the old adage, "Be careful what you wish for!" Belle didn't realize, although Wolfram would later tell her, that one of the greatest stress creating events in a person's life is relocating and starting a new job. At this point in time, all Belle knew was that she was uprooting herself and Vo from their friends and had made a deal with Trevor in order to have access to the vast resources of VBI to find Chase, without yet knowing what fallout for it she and Vo might suffer in the near future.
