Lena Marr watched intently with sky blue eyes over the shoulder of Doctor Euthanasius a view screen and a radar screen on the console in front of him, commenting as she saw the many dots on the radar, "Thaaaat looks like more than just two cages full of bats, unless they are drekking BIG cages!"
Dr. Euthanasius frowned as his eyes bulged out more than usual, as he admonished, "Eugene, you fool, what have you done! You've released them all!"
One of the man sized bats had on a body cam, so that those in the lab could see the creatures circle the Garilu, then attack it in force, shredding the vehicle and the men inside. The camera jerked from side to side, showing that the fight was hectic and brutal, and Lena had a brief glimpse through the Garilu's broken cockpit window of a woman she recognized as Sandy Bell, bleeding from several claw strikes and firing an assault rifle towards the camera until suddenly the picture and presumably the creature providing it were extinguished.
"Hey!" Exclaimed Lena, overcharging the mop in her hands and brandishing it in a threatening manner, "THAT was MY ride!"

They say that heroics don't win wars, but they sure help to bring the victory closer. At least if you are in winning side. Volodja looked at his stealth team. Several pairs of different coloured and shaped eyes looked back at him waiting what he had to say about the situation. Volodja calculated all odds and chances of survival of the team. Future perspectives weren't exactly promising. "Gentlemen," said Volodja Uljanov with his calm voice. "We are severally outnumbered. Here is the plan - you all are going to demonstrate your excellent stealth skills and leave this ground as soon as possible. From now on our team is placed under your command, Murdock. I believe that you can take everyone out alive and unharmed. I am going to cover your retreat because if I have to choose sacrificing one of you or risking my own neck, then I'll go with latter. I got nothing to lose any more. That also means that I have chance to win even if odds are against me, so you will leave and I'll stay. That's an order and will be effective from this moment without further discussions. It was a pleasure to fight along your side, gentlemen. Get the hell out of here!" Volodja saluted to his squad, swung his sapper shovel and with a smile on his young face, stepped towards the cloud consisting of huge bats. He was calm as ever, knowing that everything will be over soon. There was no sign of his beloved sandy. Not a faintest signal and that could mean the worst scenario. And that possible worst scenario made him to make that decision to face bats alone, hoping that his fall will spare lives of men under his command. There was too many lost lives already. Too many... Volodja whispered: "If you are gone, then I'd better join you rather sooner than later, Sandy. I am an impatient man, so I better reunite with you while I am still relatively young and good looking." He smiled again. Then he disappeared into thick cloud of raging bats...

Sandy Bell was surfing catching the biggest wave of her life. The waves at Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal, are famed for being among the largest in the world and she had always wanted to surf them. She wasn't sure that was where she was, but it sure looked like the pictures she had seem of the huge swells there before the Pale Wars. Her suntanned body glistened from the surf spray, and her damp long blond hair stuck to her neck and back as she pulled at the wet top of her bikini to make sure it stayed in place as she kept perfect balance on her fiberglass surfboard. She was in total control, with a calmness in solitude that she had never before attained in her life. The only noise was the roar of the wave, and her slowing heartbeat as she grew even calmer, living in the moment.
Suddenly, Sandy frowned and her blue eyes narrowed as a strident voice broke her peace and quiet.
"WAKE UP CAPTAIN! WAKE UP SANDY!" Yelled Sandy's EGO psyche, Sargent Michael "Sarge" and sometimes "Mike" Murphy. "YOU NEED TO USE YOUR MED KIT TO KEEP YOURSELF FROM BLEEDING OUT!"
Sandy's wide blue eyes opened with a start, and she followed Sargent Murphy's orders, binding her claw wounds to staunch the profuse bleeding there with bandages from her med kit that she found in her hands,a although she didn't remember getting it out. Her EGO psyche's personality was based on her memories of her squad sargent during the Pale Wars, Master Sargent Michael "Mike" Murphy, who had made it his personal mission to keep her alive during the Pale Wars, although in the end he didn't quite succeed, for no fault of his own.
Once Sandy was bandaged and the bleeding stabilized, Sarge said less loudly and more calmly although with some urgency, "Good girl Sandy! Now you NEED to stand up! Use your assault rifle as a crutch if you need to!"
"Aw, Sarge," Protested Sandy in a whiny voice that was only in her head, "I'm tired and it will ruin my Piper if I get dirt in the barrel. Just let me sleep for a bit..."
"No, Captain," Replied Sarge firmly, "To sleep is to die. We'll get the Piper cleaned later. No excuses! Get moving soldier - NOW!"
Sandy sighed, then used her Piper assault rifle as a crutch to stand up unsteadily in the muddy gully she found herself in, first glancing at the dead bloody body of her squad mate there next to her then at the smoking wreck of the Garilu nearby before mumbling a question, "Shouldn't I stay near the wreckage, you know, in case someone comes looking for me... I know Volodja will come looking for me..."
"We weren't able to get a message out before the attack, and I'm still not able to contact any of the other Protectors," Answered Sarge, " We don't now if and when any help may get here. We need to get you to a medical facility pronto and procure some better meds. I'm betting the complex that was our target has an infirmary, and has the medical supplies we need, so lets head that direction soldier."
"What if it's guarded?" Asked Sandy as she began hobbling in the direction of where she thought the doctor's habitation to be.
"We'll cross that bridge when we get to it," Answered Sarge, not verbalizing his concern that they might not even get to the bridge.

Vo Kshaa stopped in place and looked around, trying to determine what could be the source of the unusual feelings he was experiencing, but still didn't find anything suitable. "Wait, something is not right," he sent to the team through his EGO as he wasn't sure they could hear him, "Something is affecting my hearing and vestibular organs. Still can't determine what's causing it and if it's dangerous." Atticus Batman answered over his EGO to Vo and Lady, "Whatever it is also appears to be affecting the electrical currents in the air around us. It's like something above the forest is bombarding us with some sort of invisible ray or something." Atticus turned to check on Lady Christianna who trailed the two men on the recon team, seeing her holding her Crimefighter shotgun with one small chalk white hand and shading her narrowed pink eyes with the other as she looked behind her. Atticus followed her line of sight, seeing a back plume of smoke that floated up from the horizon into the grey sky. The more he looked, the more he could swear he could discern other black shapes in the sky, that were like man shaped bats, and it appeared that at least some of them were headed their way. "Trouble's coming," Said Lady out loud, her usual enigmatic smile gone and replaced with a worried pout.

Volodja Uljanov was busy fighting off with huge amount of giant crazed bats to allow his men retreat safely. Fortunately for him their size and amount gave him an advantage. If bats were smaller or came in lesser quantity, he would have been already dead, but massive amount of massive specimens can cause more trouble to themselves than to their prey as Volodja had experienced in several occasions, because they have to avoid crashing with each other and at the same time every one of them tried to be first to catch the prey. That kind of things don't occur in animal kingdom exclusively. Have you seen behaviour of the "crown of the nature" during some huge discount of limited items? If you can say "yes" then you can also compare that struggle for goods with Volodja's situation. Even the ultrasound, produced by bats, worked on Volodja's side. Although it caused him severe headache, it also messed up bat's own "radio-locating" system due to the large amount of disturbance they produced, because there was too many flying sonar systems at once. His shovel blade danced among bats and despite of getting several heavy blows, he was relatively uninjured. At least for now...
__________
"Ruined!" grieved Doctor Euthanasius. "How could you do this to me, Eugen? I picked you up from a gutter, made you whoever you are now and that's how you pay me for my kindness! What do you mean by saying that you were following orders by the letter?"
"I did! I did! I opened cages three and five as you ordered, but somehow all of them opened at once! Must be a short circuit or something like that," replied Eugen, who was eagerly scratching back of his head.
"Possible," muttered Euthanasius. "You have always been loyal to me, Eugen. Not the brightest brain among biologists, plus that little problem of drinking, but you are dedicated to our cause. And since I am used of being surrounded by incompetence, everything is possible. But we lost lot of our work and have to start all over again if we can't catch our babies! Actually there is a silver lining! Yes there is! If we return some of surviving specimens, then we have smartest, fittest and luckiest ones, suitable for providing us with a gene pool for future breeding. Even sort of negative result is a result after all!" __________
Another nose diving bat hit the ground when Volodja jumped backwards. It was a close miss but still counted. Volodja retreated few steps, keeping his eyes open for another possible daredevil attack when he heard Sophie's warning: "Watch out for that tree!"
"Which tree?" asked Volodja. He couldn't look around because two bats who discovered a gap among their colleagues were lunging themselves towards his chest at high speed.
"That fallen tree behind you! Too late!" It was too late indeed, because Volodja already stumbled to the tree trunk and fell to the ground. He managed to avoid ramming bats who's descending trajectory intersected with the horizontal surface instead of vertical target as originally planned, but he also hit his head to the ground so hard that he could hear the music ringing in his ears.
"Who put a the bomp in the bomp bah bomp bah bomp?" he managed to ask before passing out.

I had turned to check on Lady Christianna who trailed the two men on the recon team, seeing her holding her Crimefighter shotgun with one small chalk white hand and shading her narrowed pink eyes with the other as she looked behind her. I followed her line of sight, seeing a black plume of smoke that floated up from the horizon into the grey sky. The more I looked, the more I could swear I could discern other black shapes in the sky, that were like man shaped bats, and it appeared that at least some of them were headed their way.
"Trouble's coming," Said Lady out loud, her usual enigmatic smile gone and replaced with a worried pout.
As I saw the bat creatures coming our way I said, "Dak! That's towards where the Garilu was supposed to be but we can't worry about them right now! We need to take cover!"
Just then I saw somebody blurring towards us, zigzagging and shooting at the creatures dive-bombing him. So I said, "Dak somebody survived and is trying to get to us! Vo you NEED to shake it off and fight through the daking vertigo! Dak it all! Obviously it is a mutated sonar attack that they are using! Change in plans! The safest place is the compound just ahead of us but I can't leave that guy out there alone and outnumbered! Lady, you need to get Vo and yourself to the complex and get inside! Find Lena and Lestrange and get a message to the Garilu that all hell has broken loose! So you two cover yourselves in mud and some soft vegetation to help throw off the sonar. Then stick to the shadows and vegetation and get to the complex as soon as you can!........and Tianna......remember I love you and no matter what happens, NOTHING will keep me from coming back to you! Not even that bat swarm!"
Then I decided to risk it and quickly raised my helm and gave her a quick loving kiss. However as I kissed her one of the bats had broken from the rest and dive-bombed us. As I broke the kiss and pulled Lady to the ground to avoid the attack, my currently unsecured helm fell off my head and tumbled to the ground as well. Then as I stood and raised my shotgun towards the attacking beast, my anger welled up at the creature's actions and my electric blue aura started to spark brilliantly around me. Within seconds of my electric energies swelling up because of my anger at the beasts and worry over my wife, I noticed two things. One Vo's vertigo seemed to have slightly lessened and two the bat seemed to stagger and fly off course until it smacked into a tree and fell to the ground. I helped Lady up, then glanced at her and Vo to see if they had seen the same thing. Then I asked my EGO if she had any idea what just happened.
Dinara responded energetically with, "Oooh I get it! I get it!! All the electrical energies you are starting to once again channel must have caused Electromagnetic Interference with the bat's natural sonar! Atty!!...I can't believe I am about to condone your anger but....that is what needs to happen if you want to save Lady, Vo and that soldier! Channel that anger at the beasts for what they have done and their attack on Lady! Then........Then also concentrate on how you felt when you saw Mr. K'shaa and Lady kiss and channel that extreme anger!! Focus it so your body keeps projecting all that energy at that frequency! That way it keeps disrupting the bats! Then you can save that soldier and make sure all four of you get into the compound safely!!"
I told Dinara to fill Lady and Vo in on what was happening but NOT tell them what image I was going to focus heavily on to get my energies to that level again. Next I quickly looked at Lady and Vo again and sighed very heavily as I grabbed my helm and secured it to my armor instead of putting it back on. Then I forlornly frowned as I began to do exactly as Dinara suggested. As I strongly focused on the hurt and rage I had felt when I saw the kiss and thought Vo had betrayed me and Lady and that he had taken advantage of her, I snapped somewhat angrily, "Lady, Vo stay right behind me and fire your weapons as needed! We will save that soldier, then the four of us will get to the compound together!"
As soon as they readied their guns and nodded in agreement, I snapped, "Blur now!"
Then the three of us blurred towards the soldier with me in the lead and the other two directly behind me as ordered, my angry energies starting to once again glow white as they bounced angrily from my masked head. As we got closer to the soldier I recognized him right away as a private that had recently been assigned to the Vigilant's security team, I believe his name is Private Perkins. However now wasn't the time for introductions. As we got to the private's position and now in the center of the black mass of bats, they started veering away as the EMI was completely confusing them and their senses and knocking them off course.
When we got to him, he said, "Commander! Sub-Commander Bell sent me with an urgent message to warn about the bats.....but obviously you figured it out! What the hell did you do to them Sir?!"
I snapped, "No time to discuss that! Fall in next to Lady and Vo! You are now with us and we are going to the complex but tell me your exact orders on the move!"
He quickly filled us in as we moved and as I shot a charge shot at another confused bat beast, I snapped, "Orders change unexpectedly in the field Private! We get to the complex and I will try to locate Volodja and his team. You will stay with Lady and Vo under their command. The three of you will locate Lena and Lestrange, send a distress signal to Commander Taffer and then try to locate and commandeer a vehicle to get all of you back to Commander Taffer's location!"
When we got to the complex, I slammed my shoulder into the locked door we found and busted it open. As soon as we were inside, I kissed Lady quickly but with all the angry passion I was currently feeling due to the image and hateful thoughts I was channeling to keep my electrical energies so high and the bats at bay. Then as I quickly broke the kiss and stepped back outside, I said to Lady, "Remember I WILL be back to finish that kiss and MUCH MORE Tianna, MY snow Angel!"
Then I pulled the door closed behind me and ran towards Volodja's last known location. As soon as my EGO powers had finished cooling down, I re-activated blur to get there as fast as possible.

With a wicked grin on her pretty chalk white face, Lena exclaimed, "You are dead, Dr. E! You are SOOOOOOO dead! Dead, dead, dead, D-E-A-D, DEAD!" Lena pointed an alabaster finger at Dr. Euthanasia as she laughed hysterically, before saying, "Dead mad scientist walking!" Suddenly her grin disappeared, replaced with a serious look, her unblinking sky blue eyes wide as she said in a matter-of-fact way, "Let me spell it out for you, Bub. I saw Sandy Bell there in your Bat-massacre, and if Sandy was here, Volodja Uljanov is here. If Volodja Uljanov is here, then Atticus Batman is here! You know, Atticus Batman... Harbinger of Death... super powered ruthless killer of those who kill the innocent and do injustice... what, you live on an island or something? Oh, yeah, I guess you do! Well, just google it and you'll know you're dead! They're all part of a do-gooder group called the Bay Area Protectors and these Protectors flock closer than your big bats, so he won't be alone either! You're dead, man!"
Lena stopped, putting an alabaster pinkie in the corner of her lush lips as she rolled her sky blue eyes as if in deep thought, before opening them wide to stare intently at Dr. Euthanasius before saying, "However... Pooh Bear and I can save you! Atty-baby is a close personal friend of mine, and I'm absolutely sure I can convince him this was all some horrible mistake and to pretty-please-with-sprinkles-on-it don't kill my other good friend Dr. E!"
Dr. Euthanasius bulgy eyes stared impassively at Lena, reminding her of a large albino frog, before he asked suspiciously, "And what do I have to do for this sudden good will?"
Lena leaned casually on her mop as her wicked smile returned with a vengeance, replying nonchalantly, "Just agree in writing to give Marcel and me a piece of your action - say 10% - and we will protect you from the big bad boogie man!" Lena's smile broadened as she added, "Oh, yeah, and sign over your island to us, lock, stock, and barrel! You can live here as long as you want, working with your little friends and making bugs and stuff, but the island will belong to us so that when you are through with it, we can have it! You got nothing to lose and your life to gain! Looking at you, I'm betting you don't have a line of heirs waiting to take over, so what have you got to lose? With the paperwork, I can show Atticus that you work for - I mean with - us, so please Mr. Big-Bad-Batman-don't-kill-my-friend! Easy peasy! We all live happily ever after ending! Birds sing, small animals frolic, we all dance merrily!"
Still smiling like the cat that ate the canary, Lena held out her chalk white hand to be shook and asked cheerfully, "So what do you say Dr. E, deal? You need to decide pretty quick, for if I know Atticus - and I do - he's already on his way here, mad as hell, and ready to shoot first and ask questions later! Even more so if your little monsters killed Sandy!"
*****
One person who was the object of Lena's conversation, Sandy Bell, walked slowly step by painful step, using her Piper assault rifle as a crutch, towards the modernistic house hidden in the jungle. As she got to the small waterfall at the base of the house, she fell to her knees in a shallow pool there. She cupped the water in her bloodied hands, bringing it to her mouth and drinking long from it, than washing her pretty face with it as the water in the pool became red from her blood. Sandy's head started to reel, but she kept her senses long enough to fall backwards instead of face forward into the pool where she might drown, as she returned to darkness despite her EGO psyche's loud protestations.

When Atticus Batman, Vo Kshaa, Private Perkins, and Lady Christianna got to the Dr. Euthanasius' complex, Atticus slammed his shoulder into the locked door they found and busted it open. As soon as they were inside, Atticus kissed Lady quickly but with all the angry passion he was currently feeling due to the image and hateful thoughts he was channeling to keep his electrical energies so high and the bats at bay. Then as Atticus quickly broke the kiss and stepped back outside, saying to Lady, "Remember I WILL be back to finish that kiss and MUCH MORE Tianna, MY snow Angel!" Then Atticus pulled the door closed behind him and ran towards Volodja's last known location. As soon as his EGO powers had finished cooling down, he re-activated blur to get there as fast as possible. Lady leaned against the closed door, her senses reeling from the angry passion of Atticus' departing kiss, as she raised one small alabaster hand to her thin lips to feel if the heat of the kiss had seared them off, for her lips still felt on fire from it. Lady blinked her large pink eyes several times as a moistness spread in her nether regions, and she stared blankly at Vo before exclaiming, "Hela!" Lady shook her white red tipped tresses to focus her attention once again on the mission rather than on her husband's promise of what delights might come later, then stared more intently at Vo and said in a low tone, "You lead, me follow!"

On my way towards were Volodja's team was supposed to be, I detected several cloaked EGO signals. As I activated decoy with sensor sweep. Sure enough as my decoy ran forward several soldiers became uncloaked and I recognized their uniforms as that of Fortress K'shaa security. As the rest uncloaked with their ranking officer walking up to me as he did, I said, "Where is your Commander?"
The officer responded with, "Right here Sir! You can call me Murdock. Sub-Commander Uljanov put me in charge right before he sacrificed himself to act as a distraction long enough for my team to get away. I was hoping that once we re-grouped that we could go back for him! No man left behind Sir!"
I said sternly, "That I can agree with. However I will go back for Volodja. Just give me his last known location."
Murdock said sharply, "With all due respect Sir..."
I raised my hand to silence him then I said commandingly, "I will go for Volodja. I need your team to get to the Garilu's last known co-ordinates! Judging from the smoke in that direction, and what Private Perkins reported to me, they were hit pretty heavily. So I need your team to get there, check for survivors and check the condition of the Garilu's radio. If you can get it working then send a message to Taffer telling him what happened and that Lady, Vo and Private Perkins made it into the main complex and have continued with the mission. Then check the Dark Matter portals. If one is still working, then activate it and get your team and any Garilu survivors you find through it and back to the Vigilant for medical aid! If you can not get a portal working to go through, then find a defensive position near the Garilu and try to hold your ground until help comes for you...but bug out if you feel it is the best choice for you, your men, and any wounded you find!"
Then I ran towards the direction Murdock and his men pointed me. As I did I encountered a few bats but my angry energies continued to keep them at bay. As I got near a large congregation of the angry bats, my EGO Dinara, registered feint life-signs and could detect Volodja's EGO signature. So Dinara said, "Atty I am detecting life signs and an EGO! It's Mr. Volo! I think he is only unconscious but I am gonna try to contact Sophie now! I hope they are both o.k.!"
I mentally said, "Fine! If Sophie responds then tell her help is near and ask her how you and I can help!"
Then I pushed forward faster. As I got near a fallen log with several bats near it, I finally saw Volodja's unconscious and battered body. So I shot a charged shot at the bats killing several with the others trying to fly off and my EMI causing them to collide with each other and the nearby trees. When I got to Volo, I knelt down, took out my small first aid kit and double-checked to make sure he was breathing. Then I said very sternly knowing my commanding voice always gets some sort of reaction out of my accident prone friend, "Fool! We need you and I am absolutely certain that Sandy most definitely needs you! So you need to quit napping and get up right now!"

Sandy Bell's turquoise eyes fluttered open, laying in a shallow pool of water, until she suddenly sat straight up, her head pivoting jerkily on her neck as she glanced about until her unblinking eyes saw her Piper Assault rifle in the water next to her. Grabbing it by the barrel, she used it to stagger into a standing position, her legs quaking like a baby about to take its first steps. Then with a start, she suddenly straightened her spine and began to walk stiffly towards the house above the stream, using the assault rifle as a cane to keep her balance. "Sandy, NO!" Ordered her EGO psyche, Sarge, through the telepathic link they shared, "I've got you stabilized, but it's far cry from being - wait, you're not Sandy! Crap, that water you drank?!?! Sandy, don't cut me - " "We are Viral," Said an impassive Sandy-who-was-not-Sandy as she stopped in mid-step, then muttered in an emotionless voice, "And we no longer need you." Sandy reached to the back of her neck with one hand, still steadying herself with the Piper in the other, then dug into the base of her skull with her fingernails, grabbing the EGO implant located there and tearing it out with inhuman strength. She dropped the EGO implant into the water, then as red blood gushed out of the wound, she reached into the stream, grabbing a plant growing there and applying it to the back of her neck. The blood that was streaming out turned from red to green then stopped flowing completely, as the plant blended seamlessly to her neck, although the tan skin there took on a greenish hue that almost immediately began to spread in all directions to the skin on the rest of her body. Viral released her grip on the assault rifle, which in turn dropped next to the discarded EGO device with a large splash as it hit the shallow water. She began her trek again towards the house however in a less awkward gait as she became used to walking. As she entered the underbrush at the base of the hill that the house sat on, almost unseen, the vegetation made way for her; bending away to make a path for her in a way that could almost be explained as being because of the wind. There was no wind at the moment, not even a breeze, and the flora turned away from her in all directions not just one as she moved herself easily through the jungle undergrowth.

"You lead, me follow!"
Vo smiled with his most happy smile when he heard Lady's words. It was first words he could hear clearly since the bat attack started. All that time he was grasping Lady's hand as if it was the only lead he had, which, in fact, it was. All their way to the compound he was fighting to not lose his consciousness due to severe headache and dizziness. Atticus's advice to cover in foliage helped a little with it but his senses were still overloaded — that was the downside of having them enhanced, the operation which Belle made for him as a gift when she tried to share her abilities with her team members. This time the only goal he could set to himself was to survive, almost like long time ago, at the age of 9, when he managed to survive a terraforming blast and had spent at least two months in the newly terraformed jungle. Almost, because he was not alone this time. This time he was a part of the team, whose lives he felt responsible for. Even it that bad condition he had, he wanted to help his team to survive so he helped with what little he could do for them… and for Belle. With his consciousness threatening to shut down, he couldn't forget the woman he loved, Belle Starr. After their latest mission he found out that Belle was brainwashed into thinking she's a completely different person living in a completely different world. Nevertheless, Vo still had hopes that she would regain her memories some day and would remember her friends and him as her lover. If that happened, Vo knew Belle would be upset very much if he didn't survive this operation, but she also would be upset if he let his teammates die as he tried to survive himself. That's why, following Lady's lead, he still watched the surroundings as long as he could, for any dangers the jungle could hide on their way. That's why he pulled Lady's hand from time to time, making her alter the route to avoid a sticky swamp or toxic plants. He wasn't sure if Lady in her current form could be injured by them but Private Perkins who followed them definitely could.
But now his consciousness was rapidly returning back to him and it was his time to lead the way. He looked around the corner into the hallway, and his EGO scanned the environment on all frequencies she could.
"I'm detecting a lot of signals flowing around this building and to the outside," Shirra reported, "It seems like the building is some kind of a central hub controlling various powerful equipment both inside and outside it."
"What powerful equipment could be placed outside a lone house in the middle of the jungle? It doesn't seem like its owner is digging gulanite on an industrial scale or trying to rebuild an Ark or something like that. Except… is it possible that all those weather and electromagnetic effects were controlled from here?"
"The control over weather effects are not the public knowledge except for several failed experiments," Shirra replied "But if we extrapolate their results and given the density of control commands being sent around here… yes, it's possible, although all those devices should have an external power source."
"Great," Vo thought to his EGO, "Mark me the location of that hub or the control room or whatever it could be and share it with our team."
"Marking the hub," Shirra reported, "Marking the possible generator location under the waterfall as well."
"It's possible that we found the hub which controls the weather and other strange effects on this island," Vo reported to his team, "I'll mark it on your map as our primary target so we could commandeer it and make it easier for Taffer and his squad on the Riot to travel around the island. Chances are we could find people who may tell us on Lena's and Marcels' whereabouts or at least find some logs there. The secondary target is the generator in case we need to shut down the entire facility. It's a dangerous option if we don't take over the control room first as the equipment which has its own power sources may go awry if they abruptly lose a control signal. Now let's stay close to each other and form a triangle. Lady and Private Perkins, you stay behind me, watch my back and watch each other. Tell me everything you may notice that is dangerous or may be related to our mission here."
With his squad in tow, Vo started his way forward towards the location of the control hub Shirra marked for them. There was a moment he glanced over the window and saw that plants nearby were moving strangely which couldn't be explained by a simple wind or a whirl. As his EGO scan didn't return anything remarkable, he took it as a reminder that there was still a dangerous environment outside, although he expected most dangers to his squad to come from inside the building like various traps he searched for on his way or any guards who may try to stop them.

Lady Christianna gave two curt nods in affirmation when she heard Vo Kshaa's plan, and began to following him by Private Perkins side to where he indicated was a control room, however they had not taken five steps in that direction before a bright yellow energy cage seemed to appear around Perkins and herself, with Vo seen outside through it's semi-transparent surface. Before she could stop him, Perkins stepped forward, but seemed unaffected as he walked right through it to stand next to Vo; however when she tried she was thrown backward back into the energy cage, breathless and tingling all over. Lady frowned willing her density to make herself insubstantial and tried to go through the energy wall again, only to be thrown back again, more breathless but this time stinging all over. Lady decided to try something different, so she projected a decoy outside the energy cage's wall next to Vo, but when she tried to exchange places with her decoy image, was thrown back a third time as well, but this time her skin felt like it was on fire. Lady narrowed her large pain pink eyes as tears welled in them and a painful grimace crossed her pretty chalk white face, as she stammered through clenched teeth, "Stuck... s'okay... go on... stop the bad guys!" ***** Dr. Euthanasius held one pale forefinger up to Lena Marr and Marcel Lestrange as a red light on the console next to him began to blink incessantly, saying calmly, "Hold that thought. It appears we have a Gulanee spy in the house. Those energy beings and the Indogenes too are always trying to steal the fruits of my scientific genius." Lena kept her wicked grin in place, although her mind was a whirl, not remembering if the Protectors had a Gulanee on there team, and thinking there wasn't one, at least not on any strike squad. Still, Lena was an avid card player, so she kept her poker face on as she stated like if she had a full house hand, "Atticus is coming for you, and no trap will hold him long, so I'd surrender to my and Pooh Bear's tender mercies, unless you got a death wish," Then she jumped up on a counter, sitting there swinging her shapely chalk white legs as the lab coat which was the only clothing she was wearing fell carelessly open, showing her voluptuous body as she observed the obvious, "Hard to experiment when you're D-E-A-D dead." ***** Viral, the creature that wore Sandy Bell's body like a tight fitting glove, walked slowly toward the front of Dr. Euthanasius' scientific complex, discarding first Sandy's body armor and there her torn and bloodied fatigues, kicking off the worn but polished army boots last. There was no signs of the life threatening wounds she had suffered from the man-bats' claws on her now unblemished body; just a light green hue that now began to streak her blond hair as well. Once she was completely nude she sighed in contentment, brushing with calloused hands first her small but ample breast then down to her tight stomach until halting at her muscular but curvaceous hips. She sensed rather than saw two pairs of eyes watching her from the underbrush, as she smiled demurely, turning to see a hulking insectoid watching her from the thick vegetation. "Do not be afraid creature," Began Viral in a soothing voice, "We are merely another perversion of nature like yourself. We are the angels of death, seeking to punish the ravishers of Mother Earth. Together, we will with the other abominations of science cleanse this island and then the world beyond of its defilers, punishing them for assaulting and raping our dear mother." Large vines suddenly grew under and around Viral's feet taking her towards the startled insect monster which clicked it's mandibles nervously, then as the vines pushed Viral up so that she was face to face with the huge creature, she raised one green hued hand stroking its chitin covered cheek gently as she whispered like the wind, "You have nothing to fear from us - James? You truly wish to be called the name one of the defilers gave you? As you wish, James. You are the first to join our cause, but not the last!" Not removing her hand from James' cheek, Viral gestured grandly at the sky with her other hand and her smile grew wider as the sound of flapping wings could be heard as well as the slapping of mud by many webbed feet. Numerous sharkadiles and the remaining flying man bats appeared around Viral and she turned to face the house, pointing one green forefinger at it as the many plants around the complex began to batter at the walls. Sharkadiles began to propel themselves with their powerful tails against the windows and outside doors as the man-bats flew to the roof, beginning to tear at it with their powerful claws. Viral merely smiled coyly continuing to point at Dr. Euthanasius home, calling telepathically all the denizens of the island to exact their revenge on both humans and Votans, for in her mind, they were all ravagers of the planet Earth.

Instead of replying immediately to Lena's proposal, Doctor Euthanasius looked at his pager and suddenly started to recite verses: "Be lion-mettled, proud, and take no care Who chafes, who frets, or where conspirers are. Macbeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill Shall come against him." Lena stared at him with her unblinking sky blue eyes and stated: "Maaan! You are as crazy as your bats." "What is that nonsensical gibberish supposed to mean?" asked Marcel calmly but his steely eyes went even more emotionless predicting that something bad was about to happen. "The Great Birnam Wood begun to move and will cometh here, my dear uneducated guests," said Doctor Euthanasius. "I could say that ignorance is bliss but this time ignorance will be death. Death to all of us. You are facing another scientist who's creation has risen against him! My lovely creatures are marching towards this castle of mine and I believe that they don't have friendly intentions towards us all. But if you expect me to sit and wait here, playing Bach on my organ and laugh maniacally then you are wrong! First, I don't have an organ but a small spinet. Second, we are going to defend ourselves. How big is our little garrison? Two house guests, me, Hubert, Eugen and Doris. Why are you grinning Doris? It is most unsuitable moment to grin. Nothing to laugh here." Doris kept grinning. Grin on Doris's face evolved into laughter and when the laughter ended, all people in the room could hear Doris speak: "Old idiot! This is yet another miscalculation in the long row you have made. First, it's not Doris but Boris!" was said in mocking manner. Doris grabbed her grey hair between strong fingers and removed the wig, revealing that he was telling truth. "Have you wondered why everything you have done turned into a mess lately? Why all bats were released at once? Why I didn't get rid of this gentleman here? (Boris pointed his forefinger at Marcel). Why I let these two escape? Why, you may ask? We have a bit time to explain before hell breaks lose." And Boris grinned again while Euthanasius moaned: "Et Tu, Brute!" "Reasons are quite simple, you know! You are pure genius when it's about creating viruses, Euthanasius. I am willing to admit that. Otherwise you are an arrogant idiot! That's why I arranged myself amongst your servants, tolerated your caprices and constant bragging about your superior mind. I was waiting patiently for the right moment to act. The moment, you stumble on something revolutionary. It wasn't an easy task. The hardest part wasn't playing a woman, although you might think that. No! The hardest part was playing a DUMB SILENT woman, because we all know that women aren't like that. But that was necessary because nobody suspects poor, mentally limited woman, who can visit all the corners of your facility. Even if I got caught in forbidden places, you thought that I was dumb enough to get there accidentally, so I continued to spy on you. I was finally rewarded for my long time suffering, because that moment, we were waiting for, came, when you discovered the virus which is lethal to Votans only. The world belongs to humans, Euthanasius! And we, group of concerned citizens, are going to see that it goes that way. Your assistant Hubert shares our visions about the pure world, so we worked against you together and when he told me that you have a virus, but you don't have a working cure yet, we realized that it was perfect moment. Thanks to you the world will be cleansed again." While Boris spoke, Hubert stepped by his side, pulled out huge dangerous looking pistol and pointed at rest of people in the room. He didn't drooled any more, although that missing feature didn't made him prettier either. But he still looked dreadful. Boris continued: "Since masks are fallen, I can also speak about the future. Hubert and I are going to leave and produce some more of this magnificent matter. Then we are going to spread it across the world. As for your future...This attack on your castle was unexpected, but it fits our plans PERFECTLY. Why, you may ask again. No harm to telling you that, I guess. Knowing you, you would have created another virus which affects only humans to keep things balanced. Just to see, which side is going to survive when they have an equal chance having viruses and cures in their hands. We couldn't let things go that far, couldn't we? First we intended to close this island by readjusting parameters of electromagnetic shield, so we can leave you into isolation, Prince Prospero, while the Red Death stalks the world. It wouldn't matter any more if you managed to create cure or not then. I was planning to use the escape of these two as a distraction to cover our leave, but... But the whole situation changed and this island is soon to become another theatre of survival instead of being an oasis. Now you have an equal chance to prove that you are fittest to survive, Euthanasius. I considered saving some of your human guests, but they are corrupted because of their intimate, not to mention emotional contacts with Votans. I observed behaviour of your guests and can tell that it's true, so this gentleman here remains here forever, although he would have been quite nice stallion for reproducing new and improved mankind. And now I have to follow example of lady Macbeth and wash my hands. Hubert and I will leave with a submarine which already expects us. Few words more before we leave this place... Since electromagnetic shield covers the island and it can't be turned off, the rest of you will remain here to fight for survival as was told earlier. Don't worry. Your little domed world is not something unusual, because outside world is about to follow your example in much larger scale, except your survival won't mean a thing compared with the rest of the world. Only the fittest humans survive that chaos outside and they will be the building material for the new brave world once the virus has done it's job while survivors in this island are going to swim in this microscopic gene pool until they extinct. Your generators should keep the shield up for couple of centuries. Enough time to decide what will happen with them if they are alive after that. Speaking of time...Last moment to leave, because my open talk served another purpose - helping your enemies to get closer to this place. I achieved that purpose, so...Ta ta!" After saying that (and wiping their hands theatrically) Boris and Hubert stepped outside and closed the door. Soon they were on board of the submarine and Boris pushed the button of his remote control, causing an explosion which buried control room and generators, needed to keep the electromagnetic shield in working order, thus sealing the island for good. Euthanasius, remains of his staff (id est Eugen), house guests (Lena and Marcel) and Paradise Protectors remained trapped to the island...

Volodja was floating in a pink fog listening the musical message: "Life could be a Dream, sh-boom, sh-boom." That blissful state didn't last long though, because soon he was awakened by the not so melodic noises. And instead stating that life could be a dream, those noises declared: "Fool! We need you and I am absolutely certain that Sandy most definitely needs you! So you need to quit napping and get up right now!"
Volodja opened his brown eyes and whispered: "Where is Sandy? How is she? I thought that she is gone...And are my men all right? I sent them away from the hopeless battle, thinking that if there is has to be the heroic moment without a chance of surviving then it should be only for me. But now I opened my eyes and instead of seeing angels, I am looking at your helmet, Atticus. That should mean that I am still alive. Probably thanks to that mud bath I took earlier which made me "invisible" for bats. Just let me get up to my feet..."
Volodja tried to rise, but he was still experiencing giddiness, so he sat to the ground again, saying: "Just give me a second to replace this hypno wheel like whirling in front of my eyes with a different picture..."
"Now it's much better," he finally stated when disturbing vision, caused by his effort to rise and shine, disappeared. "Thanks, Sophie. I think that we should move now."

"Stuck... s'okay... go on... stop the bad guys!"
Vo stopped for a moment, balancing in indecision. It was never his policy to leave his friend like that alone in a helpless position. But on the other hand, he could not do anything to get Lady out of that strange energy cage while staying next to her because even his charge blade was passing through its beams without affecting it at all. The only chance to help Lady with the situation seemed to be to reach the control station and find a way to turn the cage off from there. But that meant he had to go away from her, leaving her behind. He didn't see leaving Private Perkins with her either as the environment was still hostile around them and Perkins could become an easy target as he obviously didn't have the ability to become insubstantial to avoid physical damage like Lady had. He also tried to contact Atticus and tell him about the situation with Lady, but Shirra found out something was blocking any long-distance EGO communication again. After a moment of hesitation he stepped closer to the cage and said,
"Please don't hurt yourself any more. We'll get to the control room, throw the bad guys out of there and turn this stupid thing off. Stay safe and wait for us here. If you can, call for Atticus, his powers can be useful to let you out of it. We'll be back soon."
Then he turned to Perkins and pointed towards the control room that was pointed on their map.
"You heard it right? We have to do it and we have to do it fast. Ready your Blur."
With their Blur on, they rushed towards the control room. The sequence of hallways turned out to be long enough for Private's EGO power to expire, so they had to slow down so that he could catch his breath as Vo didn't want to leave him behind. That's where sounds of a heated conversation started to touch Vo's enhanced hearing. He pointed at the door as they changed their route towards the room where those voices were coming from. They opened the door right when the explosion sounded, signifying Vo's original plan to get to the control room as failed.
"No need to explain, I've heard enough," Vo said right off the bat. "You have much more than two guests, but we need to get our team together. First, we need to turn off that cage in the hallway which holds one of our team members. And we have to do it right now before our Commander Atticus Batman comes here and turns this building literally upside down to get her out of it. Second, we need an access to a powerful transmitter to contact our backup team on the shore. Third, we need exact coordinates of those field generators so that our backup team could find a safe way between them to our compound. Fourth, if that virus is a variation of what I'm thinking of, then you'll have the cure. Only one test will be needed. But that cage comes first, so please tell us what we have to do to disable it given the control room is inaccessible. Wires to cut? Mirrors? Wormholes?"
