So simple but maybe yet so complicated topic. What could become from our folk if there weren't any Pale Wars and terraforming and rest of the chaos? What profession would they chose then? All assumptions on my characters are based on their personal traits. Nothing really creative. More like a warm up exercise.
Volodja Uljanov - that idealist softy would been ending up in ivory tower, away from all the troubles of the world. Maybe he would have been a famous writer or popular and charismatic lecturer in some university. Perhaps even one of the leading and most influential thinkers with a chance of being a subject of endless internet memes.
Marcel Lestrange - merciless, tough as nails and result oriented, so his future would have been in business for sure. A movie producer or president of some huge corporation which has tentacles, pardon, branches all over the world.
Wolfram von Eschen - psychiatrist par excellence, although he would spent the rest of his life proving that all German speaking psychiatrists are NOT psychoanalysts.

Interesting question...
Sandy Bell would have earned her doctorate by now, and since she never would have "died", would probably be a beloved tenured university professor in Mechanical Engineering, with her Summers working on Peace Corps projects in third world countries.*
Lady Christianna would still be the invisible teenager, hiding in the back of her high school classes, and whose only social life would be in MMO video games.
Lena Marr would still be... Lena Marr. psychopathic spy and assassin for hire - no real change there!
From age 16 to 20, Belle Starr would either be an accomplished ballerina or model, or both, probably being the CEO of her own modeling company when she got older. On the other hand at 22, she may have gone to Hollywood and become an action actress, with her own TV talk show later on.
Erika Widowmaker would have continued in government management more than likely, working as a patriot for the Votan Collective.
*Funny, I wrote mine before reading Volo's so I wouldn't be influenced, and he wrote almost the same thing for Volodja as I wrote for Sandy! It would be so funny if they were still a couple on some university campus in another alternative reality (but then, she would have aged not having been in stasis, so I guess she would have been too old for him - LOL) !

Atticus Batman - Hmm no Pale Wars means no reason to try a super soldier program and merge him with a Grid and EGO. However that does leave him with several different lifepaths.
(A - D = Kabule is still controlling their body and Atticus would have never had a chance to truly live and deside his own fate) (E - The only scenario I see Atticus retaking control of his body)
- He stayed in Omec Colony where he was killed before he was 18
- He stayed in Omec Colony where he joined a gang and from there branched out to and took control of a Mob
- He still joined the Votanis Military at 16 and eventually gotten court-martialed and perhaps executed for insubordination, striking a commanding officer and perhaps ruthlessly killing said officer.
- If he survived his stay in the military (and managed to survive his inevitable court-martial) and then left it to be his own man, he would have went on to be an extremely volatile world-travelling Assassin and Mercanary for hire.
- If he survived his stay in the military (and got control of his body back from Kabule because Kabule had desired to retire, and was certain he would always be the alpha personality and could therefor retake control whenever he wanted), upon leaving it to be his own man, he would have still become the Harbinger of Death and ruthless world-travelling bounty hunter. However he would have never settled in the Bay Area. Since he would have never met Belle, he would not start questioning his path in life, and without meeting Erika and Lady to give his life meaning and a reason to want to try to be in the light, he would have continued being one of the Best, if not the Best, (unknown and uncaught) world-travelling Serial killers of all time. If at that time he met Erika and discovered she was his sister, (with nothing helping guide him towards the light) he may have killed her out of anger for her never looking for him, or because she had a relatively decent life while her little brother was tortured regularly as a child. At the least he would have seen her as an enemy and stayed away from her until he was ready to kill her. Or until she could somehow get through to him at least partially, however as he would have been mostly, if not completely, a savage and instinctual beast of the dark by that time, even she wouldn't have had much luck getting through to him, as there is almost nothing (or perhaps absolutely nothing) left of her baby brother still alive inside the mind of that rage-driven beast.
Kaj Oenfer - Since he is a Bio-man and they were made for the Pale Wars he may not exist. However I did still come up with two different scenarios for him.
- If they did still design and create Bio-men, he probably would be an MP guarding a military base or prison somewhere, until he was designated as obsolete and either de-activated, destroyed or transferred elsewhere to do what his new masters wanted. However if he were ever released from duty, he would have continued to fdind a place where he fits in and try to be more human. (so not much difference there)
- If he were a human, he would have been a bodybuilder and in the military perhaps the Navy (where he would have become a seal) or the Marines. After his stint in the military, he would have settled down somewhere. Most likely he would have a pet dog and it would be his best friend as dogs aren't judgmental and other humans are.

Chase Lonehart - if his father hadn't died, thus sending him on his path to the Bay, he'd be the owner of the Lonehart Historical Salvage crew and boss of the Cowboys.
Iri Sewuel - if her group hadn't been attacked by Hellbugs, leading her to be lost in the woods and then being rescued by Jebediah and Chase Lonehart, she would still be going around as a part of a group providing free medical services to those who live near the quarantine zone.

Taffer — contrary to his own beliefs, he would still face circumstances under which he would have to take a path of a criminal. Given the country would be in a much better condition and his criminal antics wouldn't be tolerated so easily, he would either rot in prison or flee to South America where he would continue his life of a low-level criminal (a thief or a weapon dealer) until he's killed by his crime partners.
Vo and Lu probably wouldn't be born at all, and if they did, they would spend their short lives as lab rats without ever leaving the lab or anyone outside knowing of their existence.

Well if Atticus continued to live as a bounty hunter, then it is possible he would have still met Taffer then, as he has been known to seek black market gear so he could avoid being traced through proper channels. Not to mention the black market dealers were less likely to notify lawkeepers of his presence, before he was ready for them to know. Of course it would have been a strictly business relationship and Atticus wouldn't trust Taffer much. |
