It's 2047 in the Defiance world currently, so where were your characters in 2030, when the terraforming started? The TV series started with Nolan as a young boy, just as the aliens arrived, but then most of my characters wouldn't be born yet! LOL! I picked the terrafoming date as it's landmark to the post apocalyptic wotld of Defiance so it's a valid question! Plus, it can be fun answering it!  PS - Yes I know that this is a picture of New York City terraformed that just occured at the end of the second season of the TV show Defiance, but it is just so cool!   Okay, I guess I'll go with alphabetical order as to my ladies as to where they were 17 years ago Defiance time: Belle Starr: Belle would be only five years old, living with her guardian Papa Boudreaux in New Awlins after her parents died, being brought up as a good Catholic with a knowledge of ethics and self-defense by him. She would already demonstrate her love of dance by tap dancing to the jazz music in the French Quarter's streets after church to earn some spare scrip, and where soon she would meet a young foreign soldier named Volodja Uljanov. Erika Widowmaker:Trained as a soldier at an early age, by thirty Erika was a master sargent in the army of the Votan Collective and a grisled veteran of the Pale Wars. She was commanding a scouting squad in the Florida campaign when the area was terraformed into a nightmare jungle. Lady Christianna: Lady was just born to General Bocar and the Mistress of Judgment in Belize, the capital of the Votan Collective. When Bocar fled the city to escape political persecusion, he took his infant daughter with him, with the Mistress of Judgment's Inquisitors hot on his heels. Lena Marr:Although not technically my PC, she sure seems like it, so I'll include her. Lena would be a three year old in a state orphanage in Lima, already considered part of the stable of child prostitutes there. Sandy Bell: Sandy would be dead three years prior as an EMC officer who infiltrated a Votan Collective base in San Francisco to sabotage a space launch, but in fact trapping her consciousness there and sending her corporeal body to another dimension during a freak implosion. Taffer — at the age of 15, he was traveling through the freshly terraformed grounds and battlefields to the North of Dallas with a gang of teenagers much like him. They were stealing and scavenging weapon parts, Ark Tech and other resources to survive. Not so long after terraforming, they found a bunker without any living soul around. Two of them got killed trying to get inside due to sentry guns still operating and poisonous liquid that was spilled near the entrance. Taffer volunteered to find a way in, and was mocked upon for that as the gang didn't see him as capable of anything but picking pockets or hacking simple locks. He did found a means to infiltrate the bunker by stealing a pack of explosives from the military base which was readied for self-destruction after the troops abandoned it. Due to his lack of skill, he did not disable the detonator on explosive fully, disabling only its timer. Once he brought it to his gang, he was mocked again, especially by Zeta, the leader of the gang and his love interest, who still believed Taffer was trying to fool them and the explosive was just a hoax. When she kicked it, the detonator came live and it exploded, getting the girl killed. Eventually they found a ventilation shaft that led them inside the bunker where they had found several dead bodies of EMC soldiers, which they threw to the lower level and welded the door, and a Progenitor Core which they could not figure out and had just locked it in the storage. They set a bunker as the base of their operation, using its advantageous placement on the edge of the Storm Divide, which gave them a source of Ark salvage which literally fell from the sky during Razor Rains which they could sell in Dallas. Being the most experienced in the group since its leaders were dead, Taffer quickly became the leader of the gang, teaching the younger members to survive on the terraformed grounds. He felt it more as a burden rather than a pleasure, so once he was sure the gang will survive without him, he left to Dallas to become an independent thief. He met Raizar Ihima there, an adult Irathient who said he had seen the Irath planet with his own eyes and who taught him many ways on weapons and combat tactics, and Taffer shared some information about EMC bunkers he could dig out. That Irathient was the only one whom Taffer could call a real friend at that time. But that is a part of another story…
Vo Kshaa — at the age of 9, he was captured by EMC among other people of the group who were traveling around USA still trying to find a place to live after they fled from the Tranquility camp years ago. The war was chasing them wherever they went and finally caught them. He was separated from the group as he was considered a "special" prisoner and was being transported to some secret laboratory when the terraforming blast hit the convoy. The truck Vo was in was the only one to escape the fate of being smashed into scrap. The people who survived in it was too deranged to keep him restrained so he fled into a freshly terraformed Irathient jungle and spent about two months struggling to survive alone by his instincts. When he finally found people's camp, they barely managed to make him talk again. He was still among human EMC squad but for that time they hid his presence from their command, keeping him as a talisman.
Luuzuk Kshaa was 9 as well, living in an orphanage in Guadalajara, where she was brought by her stepmother, an Indogene named Sayo. The terraforming didn't change her life too much, except the girl discovered Ark Tech and started to experiment with it under surveillance of her stepmother. The most favorite part of her education was explosives and electronics.

Volodja Uljanov - since Europe was divided into bigger and smaller battle zones, he finished military academy and became teenage officer (about 17), leading bunch of teenage soldiers, because when chaos or disasters occur, people tend to grow up fast and are found to be suitable to be a cannon fodder. Soon he was transferred into the scouting squad. He participated in several special operations behind enemy lines, was captured and shot among other POW-s, but managed to survive. After he was sort of reborn, Volodja was recruited into military intelligence and started his second life as an intelligence officer, guerilla and became free agent and a scholar who tried to bring peace and acquire knowledge everywhere he went. He even managed to help Belle Starr without knowing that one day they will meet again.
Marcel Lestrange - was a fairly young man when terraforming turned France into the frozen tundra. He was enslaved by scrappers, lead by deranged Ark brain. Later Marcel managed to escape from slavery and he decided to become a master instead of being eternal servant.
Wolfram von Eschen (NPC with so many PC features that he deserves his place here) - he was probably dead drunk then, because it was his way to escape from reality. As a brilliant psychiatrist and a specialist of treating battle traumas he was drafted into army to cure injured minds of soldiers. He joined gladly, thinking that he joined a noble cause. That resulted with being torn apart between his sense of duty and beliefs, because thanks of his excellent work he was transferred into the mind control department with promotion of course. A therapist became to brainwasher and had to make soldiers into killing machines, perfectly knowing that it will result with mental injuries. He just could not hands that official paranoia where his one had to destroy the work of the other and finally he deserted, secluded himself and did everything to forget his past.

Atticus Batman - As Kabule, he was a (23 yr old) member of the Ekaru Kome's elite commando unit, Shkathe'Nado, so officially we was fighting somewhere in the bay areas of California. Unnofficially, a Votanis Collective government-sanctioned assassin, he was infiltrating an EMC bunker somewhere in San Fransisco to kill it's commanding officers so that squad would retreat and leave the unguarded base available for the Shkathe'Nado to take control of and use as a more permanent base of operations, and further establish their control of San Fransisco. He was currently in the middle of ruthlessly slaughtering a good portion of the EMC officers deep in that bunker when the terraforming happened, and he heard about it over the EMC's command channels. So he had to wait, hidden from sight, until he was sure it was safe for him to leave. He took that time to go through their files when possible, but staying in the shadows and unseen during his time there. Needless to say, as they had no clue of who or what slaughtered their commanding officers, most of the remaining humans either panicked and turned on each other, or tried to flee the base before getting the all clear, as most if not all the respected or feared Commanding officers were dead, or turning up dead. Atticus however just watched, the low ranking officers' reactions and panick, from the shadows and continued to dig through their systems for valuable information, just in case one of the humans got smart and locked or destroyed all important files.
Kaj Oenfer - He was 14, but as he is a bioman, he was an adult from pretty much the start. So he was an EMC soldier his whole life up to that point. At the time of the terraforming, he was stationed at Fort Benning. |

Chris Robet - Upon returning to the house after a long day of farming I lay down on the couch to drift off to slumberland away from the war and the killing, upon waking up to the final stages of the terraforming I cowered in my cellar hoping everything would be alright.

At 11 years old Frankie was in grammar school, watching movies, playing 'aliens' with friends, listening to her religious parents as they were involved in pro-Votanis refugee efforts, and getting interested in martial arts and bodybuilding. She'd meet soldiers only a little bit later.

Ryleth Ama'ek was born on Castathan of the lowest caste and was a child when the arks arrived. In 2030 he was 15 and making a living as thief and scavenger in Scandinavia since his parents were slaughtered by Xenophobes at the start of the war.
