BACKGROUND - During the Pale Wars Erika fought as a Master Sargent in Florida for the Votan Army until the terra forming disaster made it a dangerous wasteland, forcing Humans and Votans to cooperate for survival. Her fellow soldiers nicknamed her "Widowmaker" because she had killed so many human soldiers, making their spouses widowers. At the time of the terraforming of Florida, Votan causalities were so high that she was made second in command of the regional forces despite her relatively young age and low rank, and as such, she advised against allying with the humans, although her commanding officer did not heed her advice. After the Votan Army fell apart, Erika settled in a small Irathian fishing community fifteen miles south of Freedom , Alabama, marrying a local Iratian fisherman. They had a son, Cael, and then a year later a daughter, Kara. A third child died due to an epidemic of swamp fever. Two years after her daughter's birth, Erika's husband was killed on a routine fishing trip by a rampaging sharkgator. Mara was sick with a fever, so Erika had not gone with him that day staying home to care for her, so she still blames herself for his death. She took her family to South America to become citizens of the Votanis Collective after her husbands death, getting employment with the Department of State Security. Five years ago, Erika volunteered to infiltrate VBI's EGO program, her children now young adults. Erika was aboard the ill fated ERS New Freedom when it crashed in the Bay Area, some suspecting she may have had something to do with it. After doing a few missions as an Ark Hunter and completing the Thorn Liro membership trials, she traveled far south to the Votanis Collective's capital city located in what was formerly know as Brazil. After a year in the capital city, Erika became the Director of State Security for the Collective. Today, her son Cael at 26 is a popular senator, albeit from a minority party, in the Collective Parliament. Her daughter Kara at 19 married a wealthy merchent, Makus Zoxx, and now at 25 has two children of her own, a daughter Marla 6 years old and an infant son Frond, 1 year old.

The Origin of Erika Widowmaker's Name and Scar
"Guadalajara! I haven't heard that town name in a while!" Thought Erika to herself as her mind went back in time.
It was at the beginning of the Pale wars, and the Votan Collective was trying to cut out a territory in the America's for themselves, unfortunately by eradicating the indigenous population. Erika was no more than a teenager herself, but her adoptive tribe was a military unit, assigned a job to do and to protect the fledgling Votan settlement at Guadalajara. The humans fought back, but they were civilians with no weapons or training, but a force to be reckoned with because of their sheer numbers. She and the other young members of the tribe were assigned the south wall of the settlement, her superiors thought being that since it was the strongest point in the settlement, it was unlikely that humans would attack there, but the humans got hold of some dynamite and blew a breach in the south wall, as well as killing the officer and sergeant in charge, and half their number defending that wall. Erika was merely a corporal, taking command and forming a firing line as the humans attacked in the hundreds with spears, machetes, and other makeshift weapons. No matter how many they killed, the humans insanely kept coming, until there were no more humans to come. Her Castithan commander gave her credit for saving the colony by holding the breach, but publically she gave credit to her unit, although privately she felt that it was an uneven battle where no credit was due as superior technology really won the day. Erika killed so many that day her unit nicknamed her "Widowmaker" from then on, although all she remembered was the smell of death and the huge piles of human bodies around her. She also remembered many of the Votan settlers watching Erika intently from afar after the battle, especially a little Irathiant girl wearing goggles as Erika bloodied but calm, with a ragged gash across her cheek from where a machete slashed her, stood like the grim reaper, her Votan blast rifle smoking from overuse. Some of the Votans looked at her with admiration, others in horror, but Erika felt she deserved neither praise or condemnation for her day's work. She was a soldier, and had merely done her duty, nothing more.
"Could Lu have been that little girl, wearing goggles even then, or maybe she just heard the story? Surely the inhabitants of Guadalajara would have forgotten that battle by now!" Wondered Erika to herself, hoping Lu was not that girl, for Erika felt anything but proud for the massacre she did that day, so like that once done by the British to the Zulu at Roark's Drift over a hundred years previously, showing once again that history does indeed repeat itself.

The Death of Erika Widowmaker
Erika Widowmaker had watched the shuttle "Hydra" disappear into the blue skies then watched the clouds for a time, her wandering mind attributing facial features to them. She saw her long dead husband holding their infant daughter Amber who had been taken by a plague not long after her birth. She saw her father and mother who had died when their transport had crashed into the ground on Earth when Erika was not much older than her granddaughter now. She saw her comrades-in-arms from the Irathient tribe and Votan Brigade that had adopted her that had died on the battlefield next to her during the Pale Wars. Finally, she saw the Irathient Gods smiling on her from above, and with that sight she smiled and closed her jade eyes feeling content that her time had come.
"Mother, you can't give up," Pleaded Amber, her EGO psyche whose image Erika had shaped from how she imagined her infant daughter would look if she had grown up to be a teenager, adding with virtual tears streaming down her face as he spoke to Erika in Erika's mindscape, "What will I do without you?"
"You will find a better, more understanding, mistress... It is my time and the Gods await me... All I ask of you is that you give Atticus the recording I made if I died giving him my love and telling him our terrible family secret... I'm too tired to speak to him now, and if I do he will torture himself forever for not saving me even though it is pointless to try... I know him as much as I love you both and we both know that's true... Know also that - "
Suddenly a voice was talking to her, a familiar voice speaking of trophies, drinking and bottles. Her jade eyes flickered open as her head turned jerkily towards the source of that voice: a small diminutive Liberata sitting next to her holding a bottle of wine.
"Count Casannuendo... What a pleasure... You are a true friend to sit with me now but I'll have to refuse the wine I think, but thank you," Erika said with a slight smile as black blood trailed to her red clay colored chin from the corner of her mouth.
Erika took her large hand from where she had been unsuccessfully staunching her wound under her right breast and patted his furred hand with her bloodied one before gazing up at the clouds again, "Have you seen the clouds dear friend... their shapes are so comforting..."
Then Erika's head fell backward against the wall she was sitting against, her open jade eyes glazing as they stared up at the sky.
