Post by Sandy Bell on Sept 2, 2016 2:14:27 GMT
Sandy Bell had never been much in tune with computers and research, even though she had received her Masters in Mechanical Engineering, so as the others hurried to gather what was needed for their escape from the island, she found the complex's kitchen, making coffee and gathering food on a cart and wheeling it into the control room for others to help themselves if they were hungry. A slight smile passed over Sandy's pretty tan face as she saw Lena tear into the food like she hadn't eaten in a week. Private Perkins used the arrival of the food to approach Sandy, looking sheepish as he did so. "Excuse me M'am," Began Perkins, "When I spoke earlier, I didn't mean any disrespect or to imply that you did anything wrong when I - " Sandy held up one calloused tan hand palm forwards to halt his speech, saying, "Commander Batman is right, this isn't the time or place for recriminations and we need to concentrate on the living. Most of the men under my command today died, and I'll have to live with that for the rest of my life, but none of that matters if all of us die on this God forsaken island in the next hour. So if you can help them gather what they need, do so. If not, pick up your assault rifle and guard the door into the control room until we are ready to go, but also keep an eye on the good doctor and his associate, because I don't think we should trust either of them." As Private Perkins went to do as she ordered, Sandy was reminded of her own lost assault rifle when she referred to his. Taking a steaming mug of coffee with her, she made her way to the front door sipping it as she did, exiting and following a short path down to the bottom of the small waterfall below the complex and the pool of water it emptied into. She retrieved her Piper assault rifle in a shallow part of the pool, turning it upside down to drain teh water out of it as she stared with sad blue eyes at the skies above her, noticing the weird weather pattern around the island. The skies were clear above the complex and the middle of the island, but rain showers fell all along the island's edges. Sandy had noted during her time in the jungles around Lima that rain showers were common and could sprout up in a moment's notice, but this storm pattern was oddly symmetrical. "Just one more damn strange thing here," Muttered Sandy under her breath as she examined her assault rifle, finding it no worse for wear from being submerged, when sudden movement in the undergrowth near her drew her attention. Tossing the coffee mug and all and with her gun at the ready, Sandy slowly approached the brush, but when she parted the branches, she noticed that the rustling was caused by a creature a third of her size that looked like a cross between a wombat and a koala bear, which looked back at her with curious but unafraid brown eyes, making Sandy laugh as she said, "Guess I'm keeping you from your favorite watering hole little fellow," She scanned the area around them both with intense blue eyes for any hidden dangers, but seeing none, smiled warmly at the creature saying, "I'll leave you to your drink then, but be careful: There's definitely something in the water!" Sandy made her way carefully back up to the house, still smiling and holding her Piper at the ready as she took a guard position at the front door, wiping it off with a handkerchief she found in a pocket of the over-sized trousers that she had borrowed; watchful but hoping they would all make it safely off the island before their time ran out.

"How the hell people manage to find matching clothes in movies and video games almost every time when they need to change?" thought Volodja Uljanov. "I remember only couple of deliberate exceptions. Indy in the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" had problems with fitting into German uniform and "La Grande Vadrouille" ("The Great Stroll") was full of too small jackets, too tight shoes and too small or large helmets. Especially when Augustin and Stanislas were involved. I seem to belong into the club of mismatching clothing as well. Maybe because it's not a movie or a video game." Every time when Volodja moved, his set of tropical khakis (minus pith helmet) Euthanasius found him were a bit tight. Stitches let out cracking warning message even when he happened to take too deep breath. Since males in the island were obviously too small, only alternative for him would have been to dress himself into one of Boris's dresses, but that didn't suit Volodja. Khakis looked good on him but that was the only good thing he could say about them. On size doesn't fit all after all. Volodja was sure that he will make abrupt moves and disintegrates his clothes if needed. he was standing by the window at moment. Vo'Kshaa and doctor Euthanasius were more than competent to transfer the data into portable devices, so his help wasn't needed there. That is why he volunteered for lookout duty and observed the landscape, ready to warn others if something unusual happens. He was thinking about the island and worried a bit about that pile of junk they leave behind when they evacuate. Ruins, wrecks, abandoned vehicles. One day even the deadliest pieces of equipment will be integrated into environment by one of the greatest landscape artists of the world - the nature itself. Nature always has a last laugh when it prevails over creations of the humankind when humans are gone, so he was quite sure that Viral will find a way to get rid of of their waste despite of the time it will take. Compared with that...Unlike nature, who had decades and centuries, they had less than hour to pack their things and leave and that time was running low already...

Vo was busy copying data from Dr. Todt's computers to removable drives and sorting them in some appropriate form so they would be easier to use once they get to their lab on the Vigilant. Shirra was helping him in connecting to other terminals throughout the compound and several observation posts throughout the island so that they wouldn't have to run in circles between each of them. Like many scientists, doctor hadn't paid much attention to keep his data in order, so Vo and his EGO had to spend some time writing off duplicates and older versions of the same file and gathering parts of the research that were seemingly connected with each other but scattered throughout different computers. "Hey, that's something familiar I've found here," Shirra noted, "It's an archive of the data we've found on the Votacide virus in the laboratory of Red Deer where you've been kept. I have a copy of it but I think it wouldn't be a chore to copy this one too. Guess Fiel wasn't as discreet as he promised after all.""Eren has a copy of this archive too," Vo mentally replied, "There's no need to keep this information away from scientists. It's a guarantee that people around the world will be ready if this virus surfaces up again. Besides, Fiel only promised not to share the information about me and Lu. Is there anything about us in that archive?""Guess you're right, I haven’t found anything on you here… yet. Wait. Something is not right. The data seem slightly changed but in a strange way. The folder structure is the same as in my copy of the archive. File sizes and their dates are the same too. But the content is slightly different, just several groups of bytes in each file. Those areas are not filled with all zeroes or all ones like it happens when a download or a hard drive fails. The data seems legitimate but different.""So it looks like someone changed it, but we don't know who, when and for what" Vo summarized. "Exactly," Shirra confirmed, "Which got me thinking… Vo, what if it's our version of the archive is corrupted? And if not, then what if all he data we're downloading is corrupted the same way? How we're going to restore it without being lucky to have the original content like we were with the Votacide part?""We'll think of it when we finally get to the Vigilant. Your task for now is to scan through those files we have copies for and highlight their differences. I'll present them to our Doctor and we'll see if he'll be able to determine which the right one is. Then, if we'll have to restore all this data… have you hear of artificial neural networks? I think Lexy and our EGOs combined will have enough calculating power and flexibility to build one. Now let's get back to copying."After the copying process was finished, Vo looked around to see what Dr. Todt was doing, and to his surprise he found him standing next to a pile of lab equipment he managed to gather. "Is all this really necessary?" Vo asked, thinking of how they would have to transfer the entire fragile load into the Riot under time constraints. "You see, young man," Dr. Todt stated in a matter of fact way, "I've heard that given the circumstances time is the essence. Your equipment can be no worse than mine which I'm still not convinced of yet, but it will still take us some precious time to get used to it and it could be a source of unfortunate mistakes if I had to continue my research on different equipment than I'm used to." Vo sighed in surrender hoping his ATV that was stored on the Riot was still functional and capable to work as a transport for it.

Post by Atticus Batman on Sept 3, 2016 10:59:28 GMT
As everyone had started doing what they could to get ready, I hugged Lady and said to her, "Tiana, everything is going the best it can here. However there is something off compound that I would rather not leave behind." When she glanced up at me questioningly, I responded, "I doubt we will have time to load the Garilu's remains into the Vigilant. So I am going to go retrieve it's removable 'black box', as well as any useful data on it's computer systems. I feel that we should also wipe it's systems clean of any data that we do not want to fall into the wrong hands, in case we can not recover the Garilu. Also with all the data that is in the 'black box' and all the data that I will retrieve from the Garilu's computers, we should be able to rebuild it, if we indeed can not retrieve any of it." Lady nodded in understanding, then with her patented enigmatic smile in place she said, "May need help! Going too!" I agreed to her terms after warning her that it would probably be a gruesome sight. Then I went over and talked to Vo quickly, "Vo I am going to retrieve the Garilu's 'black box'. However I would also like to retrieve any important or encrypted files from it's main systems that may not be backed up on the Vigilant yet, because it is best to wipe the Garilu's systems since we will probably not have time to retrieve anything but it's black box and some important files from it's main systems. So as I saw that you have all these removable drives over here, I was wondering if you had any spares that I could use to get the files from the Garilu." Vo handed over several removable drives, as he gave me some quick tips on retrieving the data and the 'black box' from the Garilu. As soon as he was done with that, I said, "I am sure I can handle that. Lady is going with me. You are in command until we get back." Then as Lady and I started out the lab's doors, we were passing where Volodja and Sandy were guarding. So I stopped long enough to tell them where Lady and I were going and to ask them to keep an eye on Lena and Marcel as Vo had his hands full and those two were always planning something bad. Sandy tried insisting she go as well, but I told her that with me away, her skills may be needed here in the compound. Then Lady and I quickly exited the building and activated blur as we ran towards the Garilu's location. Sure enough when we got there, we saw the remains of the massacre but there were no longer any sharkadiles or bats around. As I looked at the carnage, I remembered that human soldiers always retrieved their fallen comrades' dog tags if it wasn't possible to retrieve the bodies. So we quickly boarded the broken hull of the Garilu and although the systems barely worked anymore the computer still had some power. Then I showed Lady how to access and copy the data we needed. After she started doing so, I told her I had to retrieve our fallen comrades' tags since we wouldn't have time to retrieve all of their bodies. So I exited the Garilu and begin the task of quickly locating the remains of our comrades and retrieving their tags, with the help of Dinara (My EGO psyche). Once that horrible but necessary task was done, I returned to the Garilu. Once back in there, I opened a floor panel and went through the painstaking task of removing the 'black box'. After I had finished retrieving all the dog tags and the 'black box', I checked with Lady. She was just finishing with copying all the files I directed her to and some others she thought were probably important as well. After all of that was done I activated the computer's data destruction protocols. However as our hour was almost gone, I decided we better leave even though it was only 60% done. So Lady grabbed all of the removable drives and I grabbed the 'black box', as well as retrieving my sniper rifle from one of the Garilu's compartments. Then we left the Garilu and activated blur as we quickly head back to the compound.

Post by Lena Marr on Sept 3, 2016 11:56:37 GMT
Leaning on a wall in the complex, Lena Marr watched Dr. Euthanasius/Todt pile his equipment with unblinking sky blue eyes, and when he was finished she asked, "So you're really going to bring all this shatko, are you? Think I may be able to help you with transport there, Doctor... ? Hey, what should I call you now, Dr. E or Dr. T? Aw, I guess it doesn't matter, I'm terrible at names and as I'll probably just call you whatever I feel like at the moment. However, don't forget Abbie! I've grown attached to the little bugger! Get it? She's a leech, she was in my uterus, and I said I'd grown attached to her?" Lena uttered a huge dramatic sigh before adding, "Never mind, NOBODY ever gets my jokes!" Then she sauntered to where Lady Christianna stood hugging Atticus Batman after they returned from the Garilu's wreckage and remarked with a wicked grin, "Hey Lady, you don't seem to be doing much, so come with me to the bedroom," Seeing the alarmed expression on Lady's chalk white face and Atticus' stance change to even a more protective one than before, Lena laughed merrily, reassuringly explaining, "Don't worry, it's nothing of a sexual manner, although with your new ghostly powers, some girl-on-girl action WOULD be fun, but both our guys are such wet blankets as to stuff like that, so that ain't going to be happening. I just need you to help me make something that can help us all haul the good doctor's crap out of here more easily and quickly when our ride arrives." As Lena led Lady back to Doris/Boris' bedroom where she had just come from with her dress, she chuckled as she remarked, "Wet blankets... and we're going to a bedroom! Get it? I am such the jokester today, even if my jokes only amuse me! But then... that's all that matters, right? ME!" Lady raised one white eyebrow and pursed her thin lips into a pout but said nothing, watching Lena intently with her striking pink eyes. Lady was always miserly with her words, not wanting to waste time even uttering them if at all possible, whereas Lena was just the opposite, throwing words around like they were confetti. Lady sometimes wondered if it was because Lena liked the sound of her own voice so much, or if it was because she had been alone without anybody to love and trust for so long before Marcel that Lena had gotten used to her voice being her only companion. Lady didn't wonder long about such things, for Lady was not one to worry much about the past, nor about the future much either, preferring to live in the present, although since she had married Atticus and birthed their twins, she was thinking more about the future than she had ever before in her young teenage life. When the two Castithan woman reached the bedroom, Lena immediately began stripping the bed of it's bed sheets, ordering over her shoulder, "Check the drawers for more bed sheets, and anything we can use like a rope, like maybe belts or straps. If we can't find anything like that, we'll have to tear up some clothes to make some." "Whatfo?" Asked Lady, although she did as she was asked, soon finding some more bed sheets in a drawer filled with clean linens. "We are going to make makeshift backpacks for everyone out of sheets and the struts from this bed, so we can keep our hands free for weapons in case we are attacked on our way to our taxi," Answered Lena cheerfully, "Don't want to have your hands full when your'e being chased and shot at, don't you know!" Actually, Lady didn't know, for although she grew up poor, her father Bocar was like most traditional Castithan parents who sheltered their daughters, hoping to marry or indenture them off to a higher, richer caste when they were grown. Lady knew that was not true for Lena who had grown up in an orphanage that was a front for a child brothel in Lima; however, Lady was curious and asked, "Where?" "Where did I learn to make makeshift backpacks?" Lena talked as she finished her first backpack and began a second, reminiscing, "When I was only a little younger than you, I was a pretty good cat burglar as well as a sneak thief. You have to diversify your skills if you are going to survive the mean streets of Lima. Anyway, when you are burglarizing a home or business, you would often find more good stuff than you could carry out, and you really wanted to keep your hands free in case the homeowner or businessman or law keeper suddenly appeared on the scene. True, I could have wore a backpack into a place, but it would be mighty suspicious strolling down the boulevard wearing an empty one, and at that time I had Officer Kima hot on my trail, so I liked to travel light for fast getaways. SOOOOOO as a matter of practicality, and with the help of a horny native basket maker, I learned how to make bush craft backpacks fast but sturdy." The two Castithan women, the same in some ways but different in so many others, worked quickly as they engaged in the type of talk girlfriends do when they are together. They talked about their men and families, their homes, and their plans for the future, although Lena was careful not to mention her plans of future genocide. As they worked, when Lena moved one of the mattresses, a book fell out on to the floor. Lena winced at the loud sound the book made when it fell, knowing there was no way Lady could not have heard it so that Lena could just safely pocket it. "Huh," said Lena nonchalantly, "Looks like Doris the Boris kept a journal... and its in some kind of code! Who knew? Probably just about whether she slash he was going dress for the day as a guy or as a gal, but it might be fun to break the code after we get out of here! Can't have little Lena getting bored, can we? Idle hands are the Devil's workshop and all!" Once they had finished a dozen backpacks, Lena and Lady took their work product to the control room and placed them next to the stack of equipment Dr. Todt had collected. Lena threw up her hands afterwards and with a wicked smile took a ta-da stance, as Lady went back next to Atticus, hugging him tightly around his midriff while whispering to him, "Lena found a book." Lena dusted of her chalk white hands as if they were dirty, then pranced back in forth in front of her lover, Marcel Lestrange, like a model on a runway stage, saying with a pretty pout, "Pooh-bear, You never told me how beautiful my new outfit is! Flower prints are SOOOOOO in this year!"

Post by Sandy Bell on Sept 3, 2016 18:05:46 GMT
Sandy Bell had fallen into the deepest darkest black hole that she had ever been in her life, and it seemed to be bottomless and with no way out. It wasn't a real pit, but it was an emotional one and Sandy felt as helpless and out of control as if it had been a real one. She had fallen into it when she first realized that she had failed her squad during this mission, getting most of them killed. She began to fall faster when Commander Batman would not let her go with Lady Christianna and himself to retrieve her men's dog tags at the Garilu's wreckage, which was SOP when there were deaths. When they returned from the Garilu, Sandy asked if she could carry the fallen men's tags, and Lady had silently handed them over to her, although her pink eyes showed that she was hesitant to do so.
"Probably thinks I'll lose them, I'm just that damn incompetent," Thought Sandy to herself as she put the tags around her own neck next to her own, knowing that they would go home if she did, which she wasn't sure any of them would as time was fast running out.
As Atticus and Lady went back inside Dr. Todt's compound, she glanced with sad blue eyes at her lover, Volodja Uljanov, who stood guard with her at the front door of the complex. They had not exchanged more than two words since Viral left her body and their initial exclamations of love and relief. She knew he could tell she didn't want to talk, and was just waiting until she made some indication that she was ready to do so, but that time hadn't come yet, so he waited silently, wrapped in his own thoughts.
Suddenly, Sandy turned to Volodja, her blue eyes wide as she said frantically, "I've got to try to buy us more time! Someone has to keep this door guarded while I do, and that would be you! Don't worry, I'll be okay, and I won't let anybody or anything kill me unless I want them to!"
Volodja frowned at that last comment, but before he could say anything, his lips were busy as Sandy gave him a short but passionate kiss, but then with a mumbled, "I love you," she disappeared down the path that led to the waterfall and shallow pool that lay below Dr. Todt's house. Running as fast as she could, and still holding her Piper assault rifle, Sandy found herself in a matter of seconds on the muddy bank surrounding the stagnate pool, which was where she had been when the island's consciousness had dispossessed her.
"Viral," Sandy yelled towards the water, begging, "We need more time! Our transport is not here yet, as we had a lot of wounded for them to pick up on the island and they had to disable the dome around it! We aren't going to be able to leave with the timetable you gave us, and we really, really want to! Whatever you want that I have I'll give you, just give us another hour! If you want this body, I'll give it to you freely! Just don't kill Volodja and the others! It wouldn't be fair when we are trying so hard to do as you wish!"
Only the wind answered Sandy, and as much as she hoped to find a discernible voice within it, she could not no matter how hard she listened. She dropped to her knees in the mud as she muttered, "It's just not fucking fair..."
Staring at the sparkling water and spotting a single leaf moving to and fro as the water from the waterfall cascaded into the pool, Sandy couldn't help to think that she was like that leaf, totally our of control of her own life. Atticus did not fool her when he wouldn't let her go to retrieve her fallen squad members dog tags when he said he needed her to stay at guard while he was gone in case of attack. He had left her to protect her from the dangers of the world. Volodja always tried to protect her too. So did the numerous squad sergeants she had throughout her military career, and her parents and big sister before that.
"Everyone sees the truth but me, and it's as obvious as the nose on my face," Thought Sandy to herself, "Give me a job and I'll screw it up - and probably get others killed to boot! I'm a big fat fucking failure! I failed during the Pale Wars to destroy the Dark Matter base, just getting me shuttled to a void between realities until the Protectors rescued me! I failed at keeping Erika and myself from being kidnapped by the mad scientist. I failed my squad most recently here on the island, getting most of them killed. My whole life is just a series of failures, punctuated with a few apparent successes but which really were damned failures too. Sure, I was the hero of Mt. Tam, leading the EMC charge that took the Votan hard point during the Pale Wars, but a lot of good men died following me as I waved my little flag and I almost lost my stupid life as well."
"Yeah, that was some big fucking victory. Hell, it didn't shorten the war even one damn day," Muttered Sandy out loud, then she was hit with a sudden idea about how to get Viral's attention.
Sandy carefully set her Piper assault rifle down on the river bank, then crawled from there into the tepid pool of water, cupping her hands and drinking deeply of it, duplicating the action that let Viral possess her body in the first place. After taking two more long drinks, Sandy realized that nothing was happening. Her skin remained tan, her eyes blue, and there was no magic transformation into a supernatural entity of seemingly limitless power. Sandy sadly realized she had failed yet again, and crawled back to where she had laid her Piper. As she came out of the water she sat next to her assault rifle, staring at it silently, until impulsively she picked it up and thrust its barrel into her mouth. The bitter metallic taste of it overwhelmed her mouth as Sandy closed her eyes tight, reaching her hand out down the length of her weapon until it could reach the gun's trigger and pull it.

Post by Marcel Lestrange on Sept 4, 2016 7:31:09 GMT
"My precious Honey Pot," said Marcel Lestrange with a grin. "I am guilty as charged but let me say a word on my defence. You are so stunning in that dress that I could not do anything else than stand there speechless and admire you. And then you already left with Madame Batman and I am most impressed by your idea of creating backpacks out of nothing. I know that it had to be YOUR idea because you were the one who asked this young woman to join you. That meant that you had a working idea and I am most pleased to see the results." Before Marcel could continue, he could hear Volodja Uljanov's voice who said decisively to himself, because he was still staring out of the window and not at anyone in the room: "You have my permission." After that Marcel could hear noise of tearing stitches of Volodja's khakis when his body grew and turned green as he was turning into Incredible Hulk. But transformation lasted only for a brief moment. After that Volodja regained his normal size and colour. Except his eyes which became turquoise. "Is this infamous case of the Nerd Rage?" asked Marcel Lestrange mockingly. "Not very impressive, I must say. But how did you..." Instead of replying right away, Volodja rose his hand and made a slight move which caused nearby potted tato plant bend it's vine and threw the fruit at Marcel. "Quiet, disrespectful Manling," said Volodja's voice. "We are the island. Manling who owns this body opened the door for us when he swam in our pond, but since he didn't dank the water, he resisted us long enough to enable one young woman to convince us that taking over someone's body without asking first would be inappropriate. This time we asked his permission and he agreed to let us in while he plays poker with another personality in his body, although he would prefer chess. But enough of that. We are here because that young woman told us that one hour is not enough to gather your wounded. From our point of view it was a bit unexpected request. In nature most of injured specimens either live or die without much outer care, but you, humans and Votans seem to take care of your kind when they are disabled. Only most sophisticated and social life forms will do such things. Wolves or whales for example. Preserving lives of your own kind is another new thing I learned about humanoids. Mostly thanks to this young woman who was willing to sacrifice herself for the sake of others. At least on some levels you are dedicated on preserving lives, although in general sense humans have done everything possible to destroy natural environment and themselves along it. We also decided to come here because that young woman and her Manling didn't knew that there are not only wounded to take care of but also that we are sealed off from the rest of the world by some sort of electromagnetic filed when they negotiated with us. Nature is not cruel. That is why we are just towards you and give you time to gather your crew members, remains of your...destroyed aggregate and find a way to get rid of this unnatural energy shield. It would be fair to you. Try to avoid cause more harm when you are doing that. Our patience has it's limits." Volodja Uljanov's body looked at them with serious look in his turquoise eyes. Volodja ended this short speech by saying: "Since we are done here we will go and inform this young woman that her voice was heard. And watch the evidence this Manling wanted to present us when he spoke about ecological edutainment. It is a strange piece of evidence indeed. Just as strange as this Manling is. A cartoon, called "Capten Planet and the Planeteers." Before anyone could respond anything, his body jumped out of the window, landing to his feet and as the next thing he was running towards the pool. "One thing I can say,"commented Marcel Lestrange after Viral was out of their sight. "This nature has the same annoying habit to toss words at us just like Volodja. And not only words. Maudit légume! Damned vegetables!"

"CLICK."
The sound of her assault rifle hitting an empty chamber resounded through Sandy Bell's brain.
"CLICK... CLICK."
Sandy pulled her Piper's barrel from her mouth, letting her assault rifle fall into the mud beside her as her shoulders sagged and her weight shifted from her knees still planted in the mud to her haunches, and she thought a last thought, "Another fucking failure in a lifetime of failures!"
Although her EGO psyche screamed at Sandy that her thought was not true, she had already blocked his voice, so she could not hear his screams not to do what she had planned to do. Sandy only vaguely heard the wet footsteps that grew louder with every moment. Suddenly her lover's warm arms were around her as he dropped into the mud, saying something unintelligible that echoed down the empty chambers of her mind. As Volodja Uljanov looked into Sandy's blue eyes, they looked at him blankly, and he could not help himself as he held her tight from being reminded of the the many dead men's eyes staring into space on a battlefield that he had seen in his lifetime.
From the underbrush, another set of eyes watched, beastly and hungry, disappointed that it's prey was escaping, thinking to itself in consolation, "Oh well, at least I didn't break my rule of taking prey that is pregnant, although this one would have been a new unique taste. I wonder if it knows it is with child?"

As Marcel had started to mock Volodja as usual I had caught slight movement in my peripheral vision. As I turned my head slightly toward it I saw a potted tato plant bend it's vine and throw it's fruit at Marcel. Then we all heard Volodja, who apparently wasn't Volodja, go on a lecture about the island and how our kind didn't cease to surprise her. The voice even agreed to give us more time as long as we succeeded in claiming our wounded and gear, disabling the Electromagnetic field and made sure we did our best not to disturb nature any more in the process.
Before anyone could respond anything, Volodja's body jumped out of the window, landing to his feet and as the next thing he was running towards the pool.
"One thing I can say,"commented Marcel Lestrange after Viral was out of their sight. "This nature has the same annoying habit to toss words at us just like Volodja. And not only words. Maudit légume! Damned vegetables!"
I glanced at Marcel and said, "It appears we agree again Lestrange. That 'word tossing' can be quite trying. However nature was at least kind enough to give you your daily dose of vegetables. We also managed to get even more time thanks to Sandy. So we better make the best of it."
I turned to Vo and said, "Vo! Try to contact Taffer and inform him that Sandy managed to buy us more time, but that in return we have to promise to completely disable that electromagnetic shield generator and do everything that we can to prevent hurting the island and it's "inhabitants' in the process. So do what you can to help him with that from here. Also see if he can access the Garilu's systems remotely and cancel it's data wipe protocols before it is finished. Lady backed up the important files before I started that process. However now that we have time to salvage the Garilu, it would be nice if we could stop that wipe and save even more of the information on it's systems. It would definitely make rebuilding it much easier if we can recover the Garilu and most of it's integral programming after all."
I glanced at Lena and said, "You will need to tell me about this book that you found later. However as Volodja is the daking scholar I am sure he would be more interested in whatever it is than either of us are."
Then I quickly went and retrieved a gurney and as I wheeled it out the door and towards where Volodja was kneeling holding Sandy, Lady grabbed a first aid kit from the lab and followed me in case it was needed. Volodja glanced seemingly numbly up at me and I said, "She may not know it but she saved us again. I may be willing to help protect the nature and inhabitants of this island, however I am NOT willing to lose Sandy or any more family or crew to this island. So let's get her on the gurney and back inside so we can take care of her and keep her safe until help arrives."

Sandy Bell silently pushed herself away from those who put her onto a gurney, struggling to her feet and walking determinedly towards the door. Her tan hand went palms up towards any one who tried to stop her, Until Lady Christianna ordered, "S'ok. Me follow." The rest of the team were almost more surprised at Lady speaking up as Sandy trying to leave the doctor's complex, so they allowed the two women to leave out the front door, although Atticus growled, "Get right back as soon as possible! No dawdling!"
Once out the front door, Sandy stumbled down the path, almost falling twice, but when Lady tried to steady her, Sandy waved her away. In a short amount of time, they arrived at the base of the house where the shallow pool of water lay, the end destination of the nearby waterfall. Sandy looked around with impassive blue eyes, finally spotting her Piper assault rifle where she had dropped it into the mud. Sandy bent at the waist, grabbing the gun by it's barrel and then turning and stumbling back up the path, dragging it behind her and with Lady following.
Soon they were both back in the house where Sandy found a towel and cleaned her assault rifle in a robotic function, disassembling it quickly as she was trained in the EMC, and then meticulously cleaning each part before assembling it again. Without saying a word, Sandy then mechanically put on one of the makeshift backpacks, filling it to its brim with the doctor's equipment. Then adjusting the shoulder straps, she walked straight up to Atticus Batman and saluted with a shaky hand.
"Captain Sandy Bell, reporting for duty," Said Sandy, her voice with only a slightly discern-able quiver and holding her Piper assault rifle at the ready, "Awaiting your orders Commander Batman."
Lena Marr, her own backpack already on and loaded, tossed Boris' journal to Volodja Uljanov with a wicked smile, remarking to him, "Feisty, ain't she?"
Volodja merely shook his head once in agreement, but he didn't like the dead look in Sandy's blue eyes, or the fact that she would stumble every few steps, but always catching herself before she could fall down, and always - ALWAYS - refusing help.

Vo nodded in agreement on Atticus's words and rushed in blur to the radio. To his joy, it took him mere seconds to hear Taffer's voice after he called.
"Glad to hear you again Taf," he transferred, "But I'm afraid we have some more things to do before we can get away safely. We'll have to disable the shield completely and we better take the remains of Garilu with us. Viral demands this as a returning favor in exchange of giving us more time to gather for the evacuation. Who's Viral you ask? Well, I'm not quite sure who she is, but she's very powerful and we decided that making her angry is not a good idea. I hope others will explain it better than me when we finally meet in person."
"Is it familial for them?" Thought Taffer as he glanced behind his back where he expected Lu was resting and shook his head in disbelief. But out loud he said, "Okay Vo, I got an idea for that. But I'll pick you up first anyway. I'm sending you the coordinates of our meeting place. It's not far from the compound and it's the place where the central shield generator is located. The explosion has cleaned us a suitable landing area and we'll be able to work on reprogramming the next generator while you're closing in to us. The idea is simple. We already have one generator working in antiphase. Now we'll reprogram the central one in a similar way, and then the one next to the Garilu wreckage. This way we'll have a straight line of antiphase generators cutting the protecting shield in half. Those generators are programmed to work in sync with each other, so when they lose the signal from more than half of other generators, they will throw an error and shut down. The antiphase ones will follow them after. This way we'll have all of them shut down without the need to reach each one of them. Next, we'll collect the remains of Garilu with your help and I hope we'll be ready to go after."
As Vo blurred back to finish packing his part of Dr. Todt's equipment and share the coordinates of the meeting place and the details of his new plan, Taffer addressed the Riot team through the intercom.
"Attention team," He voiced, "We have a change in plans. We're following our path to the meeting place, but we're not going to be just waiting there. We'll go reprogram another generator. And then, after we get our team together, we'll make another short flight and pickup the remains of the Garilu rover as well, reprogramming another generator on our way. As you remember, those generators were buried underground with a series of explosions. It means we'll have to go some quick digging. Lu, if you feel better now, I'm afraid we'll need your service again. You're the best Pulverizer operator and what is more important, you seem to know exactly where to hit with it. That's what we need, unless we're going to use Riot's pulse cannon which I'm not inclined to as the result might be devastating."
Upon hearing that, Lu threw up her hands and said, not really caring if Taffer can hear her or not, "Oh come on! Someone have just disabled my EGO, poisoned me with some nasty tranquilizer, forced me to this bed and now he says, Lu would you be so kind to help me do the hard work. You know what — I knew where to hit when I had my EGO scanning the surface. Now I'm mostly blind thanks to your special medicine. The Pulverizer is over there and if someone with functioning EGO takes it and plays with it for a while, I won't be crying thief."

As Lu saw a kind of distrust in Attila's eyes, she added, "Come on, do you really think I'm doing to run off? Look at me, I can barely walk and I can't hold anything bigger that my Order pistol and I have my EGO disabled! Whatever beasts have injured all those people, they will tear me apart if I spend there more than a minute! None of you know how to set it for a self-destruct properly, Taffer is busy piloting so it's only me who's able to do that!"
As Attila was about to respond to her, they heard Taffer talking over the comms. "Attention team," Taffer voiced, "We have a change in plans. We're following our path to the meeting place, but we're not going to be just waiting there. We'll go reprogram another generator. And then, after we get our team together, we'll make another short flight and pickup the remains of the Garilu rover as well, reprogramming another generator on our way. The Pulverizer is over there and if someone with functioning EGO takes it and plays with it for a while, I won't be crying thief."
Attila said calmly but concerned, and with a little distrust (After all, he had learned from growing up in the wilds of Mongolia, that sometimes a wounded warrior would try to manipulate their teammates for some reason. Usually it ended up being because their injuries rendered them temporarily delusional or their injuries or some kind of poison was affecting them mentally, but it was of course always possible that there was some other unknown reason that wasn't so easy to figure out.), "I am sure the Commanders have thought about the portals and from what I understand Atticus Batman is a former Dark Matter Assassin, so he would likely know even better than any of us how to correctly disable or destroy those portals if needed. Not to mention that you just said yourself that you can barely walk, can't carry anything bigger than your pistol and are mostly blind. So it is NOT a good idea for you to go into such a dangerous area in your state and there is no way I would feel right about allowing it when you are so injured. So I think it is best for us to just inform Taffer and let him contact Batman with the information. However the portal is on the Garilu and it sounds like we will be reclaiming the Garilu soon. So I don't see why we need to worry about the portal at the moment. Besides we are already worried about you, so please don't do something to make us worry more."

One possible way to prepare oneself for dealing with major problems is probably begin with smaller ones, like packing another makeshift backpack. That's what Volodja Uljanov was doing, although he could not get lifeless glance of Sandy's beautiful blue eyes out of his mind. Yup, it was his mind again because Viral kept her promise and left his body as soon they reached to Sandy. Yet it didn't brought along any inner peace because....because that dead blank look in Sandy's eyes. They used to be so lively, so warm when they looked at Volodja. To be honest - sometimes they used to be upset as well, but even that was way better than lacking any kind of emotion...
Small sized book, tossed at him by the white hand of Lena Marr, caught his attention for a moment. He automatically lifted his hand, caught it and nodded absent-mindedly at Lena's remark about Sandy. Volodja slid his eyes over written lines which at moment didn't made any sense to him. Then he closed the book, put it into chest pocket of remains of his khakis. "Will take closer look later," was his only short voice comment.
To lift his heavy load in most effective way, Volodja used one of his hands to grab pack's haul loop and with bent knees, slid the pack up to his thigh and let it rest for a moment. As a next thing he steadied pack with one hand still on the haul loop and slipped his other arm and shoulder through one of the shoulder straps, pushing his shoulder in as far as possible. Avoiding making any abrupt moves, Volodja leaned forwards, swung heavy backpack to his back and slipped his other arm through the other shoulder strap. Done! His load was heavy indeed but not as much as burden on Volodja's heart when he looked his beloved Sandy.
His physical burden was about to increase as well, because Marcel Lestrange stepped by his side and patted his backpack with his heavy arm, saying recognisably: "Strong like a horse! And stubborn like an ass! Let us put these two together and we get a pack mule."
"It's going to be a long trip," thought Volodja when he begun to move, but didn't told it out loud. Quite opposite - Volodja became unusually quiet and measured ground with his strong long feet head lowered. From time to time he lifted his glance to Sandy. Silently. But every time when Sandy looked at him and he noticed that, Volodja tried to smile encouragingly to her, hoping that it has at least some use. Since Sandy refused any attempts to help her when she almost fell, smiling to her was only kind of support Volodja could offer...

Shortly after Sandy and Lady had returned from their quick trip, Sandy found a towel and cleaned her assault rifle in a robotic function, disassembling it quickly as she was trained in the EMC, and then meticulously cleaning each part before assembling it again.
While Sandy was working with her assault rifle the rest of us continued with our other preperations until Vo had blurred back to finish packing his part of Dr. Todt's equipment and share the coordinates of the meeting place and the details of his new plan to all of us. As that was finished Sandy got up and without saying a word, she then mechanically put on one of the makeshift backpacks, filling it to its brim with the doctor's equipment. Then adjusting the shoulder straps, she walked straight up to me and saluted with a shaky hand.
"Captain Sandy Bell, reporting for duty," Said Sandy, her voice with only a slightly discern-able quiver and holding her Piper assault rifle at the ready, "Awaiting your orders Commander Batman."
I begrudgingly returned the salute, as I responded in my usual commanding tone with, "Very well Captain Bell. Once we are done packing, everyone will grab their packs. Then we will move double-time to the rendezvous point. Everyone be on the ready for anything. Remember we have noncombatants with us so we need to keep them in the middle of the group to keep them both safe. "
Then I noticed Lena and Volodja have a little verbal exchange as she tossed the diary at him. Then everyone else started getting their packs. I helped Lady put on and adjust the pack that she packed for herself. Then after everyone else had grabbed their gear, I picked up the last two packs and securing them together with a heavy strap (basically turning them into over-shoulder saddlebags). Next I draped them over my shoulder and readied my shotgun.
As I did so, I noticed Sandy heading towards the door with Volodja right behind. So I said calmly, "Alright it looks like Sandy and Volodja want point. So I will take rearguard. Now lets' move out!"
Everyone quickly began to fall in place and move out with Sandy and Volodja leading the way, despite Sandy's faltering steps and refusal to accept help of any type.

"When I said I was mostly blind I meant that I cannot scan the terrain for weaknesses without my EGO," Lu replied to Attila as she reluctantly switched her glance from the portal to him, "But you're right on everything else. Also it doesn't change the fact that I'm useless for almost any task with my EGO disabled."
The spaceship landed softly at the clearing that was created by the explosion and Attila could notice that for a moment Lu's face writhed with almost animal anger as they heard Taffer's footsteps closing in. But it returned to normal very quickly so when Taffer entered the room, he could only see that face was impassive as when he left her on the cot.
"You know, our Riot has its own sensors too, so you can use it to scan the surface and then highlight weak spots with the laser beam," Taffer said as he measured Lu with a concerned look, "In fact we could really use your knowledge. You point us where to, we do the hard work." Taffer smiled with corners of his mouth as he echoed Lu's words showing he hear everything she said before and continued seriously, "So Attila comes with me, Lu stays in the cockpit, Atika's on the radio in case we get a message from one of our teams. Sa for the equipment…"
Taffer turned his head to the Pulverizer that was sitting next to the wall, picked it up and tried to hide it under his jacket, although it was clearly too big to be concealed this way. Then he glanced at Lu again and pretended that he was trying to sneak away. His movements were so obvious and exaggerated that Lu could not help but laugh out loud, wondering how she could feel so hostile towards her friend just a moment ago.
As Taffer showed a thumb up to her, approving her change of mood, and thanked Attila for a good job at keeping Lu safe, she made her way to the cockpit and activated the scanner mentally asking her EGO to inform her when Taffer and Attila appeared at the working zone so she could scan the ground for them. Then she took out her sketch board she was drawing her picture on to make a few strokes on it while he waited. Suddenly she found out she didn't hear Klimi's confirmation on receiving her request and remembered her EGO was not functioning at the moment. She sighed as she put away the sketch board and concentrated on the scanner readings.
While Taffer and Attila continued their work on digging a tunnel to the buried emitter, Atika could notice a group of friendly targets on her radar. She also could notice Lu also turned her head towards where they were coming from, although her radar was not active at the moment and her EGO was still disabled. Surprisingly, Lu seemed to be not happy to see them, as she stared at their direction and moaned repeatedly "No, No, go away, go away, go away!"
