Erika noticed me watching her, then I asked privately through our EGOs with humor clearly in my voice, "Commander Widowmaker?"
Erika smiled slightly and retorted via her EGO, "As a member of the Commanding Triumvirate of Fortress K'shaa, if you are a Commander, then I am a Commander. Besides, you know how pliable Brody is to a person with an authoritative title. As to the other, just because Belle trusts Iri doesn't mean either of us can afford to. We have no idea what she has been doing - or what may have been done to her - in the interim since we last saw her. The Mistress of Judgment may even have Cody like she had Vo to force Belle to do her will. Our whole family will be located in Fortress K'shaa soon, and I will not have them endangered at the last moment due to an act of charity."
I respond through our EGO link with, "Alright Commander titles for all three of the triumvirate, the Fool included. As for your orders to Smythe, I can't say that I disagree. Besides as I have said before, personnel and admin decisions are your department, not mine. Besides if she wants to find anything, then she NEEDS Smythe. Belle may not realize it, but I had Smythe start reviewing all the files that he could on the Fotress's systems and lock them behind some pretty extreme security and firewalls. The only ones with access to the most sensitive files, are the Command Triumvirate and Taffer, and Smythe won't admit it, but I think it is because he is not as capable at preventing hacking, as Taffer is at countering hacking prevention. However I do agree that we need to make completely sure that all of this do-gooder charity the others insist on, does NOT put OUR family or the other inhabitants of Fortress Ka'shaa at unneeded risk."
Meanwhile I take the second pilot's seat as Taffer suggested, and ignore the insults being exchanged, though I do find some of them entertaining. After we go over everything and I take over the piloting, I say, "You know anything is possible. So if Skarr does have a kill switch wired to his heart, then we just make sure it doesn't get triggered until AFTER all of you and the people that we are rescuing are safely aboard our ship and back in flight."

MOM took a small bite of a s'more from the plate of s'mores on the ground as she sat by the fire, enjoying it's warmth. She materialized a shawl, still chilled from the cool green mist surrounding them. She looked up into the sincere but tortured eyes of the handsome man in front of her, and smiled warmly, looking so much like an older version of her daughter, Belle Starr. MOM laughed melodically, then replied, "The heart wants what the heart wants! You men and your egos! Belle is her own woman and has a very strong will. It's a trait that runs in our family. Belle would never be seduced unless she wanted to be seduced, and if she deems you worthy to be seduced by, then you must be a very good man indeed. Both men she chose to be seduced by in the past were very good men: Joshua Nolan and Vo K'shaa. Each had perhaps a fatal flaw, but that flaw was far outweighed by their desire to help, what Belle would call, the innocents of the world. Joshua had a wandering eye and a restless way, but as one of the defiant few proved his worth, and many times since then. Vo was completely devoted to Belle, to a fault perhaps often forgoing his own safety for hers, but he too shared her mission to save the innocents of the world. Belle loved both men, and was devoted to them as long as they were devoted to her, and maybe even when they weren't as was the case with Joshua, but Belle has a big heart, with a huge capacity to love." MOM put the nibbled s'more back on the plate and stood up, embracing Volodja with a motherly hug, saying, "You are a very good man Volodja. I've watched you from afar, and I've seen that you have done a great deal of good with Belle's team, and even when you failed, it was with the best of intentions and not from a lack of trying, but you too have a fatal flaw. Volodja, you are much too hard on yourself, and it tends to be self-destructive. If you don't mind taken some motherly advice from a not-so-old woman, please allow yourself to be happy, for if you do so, you will also make Belle happy as well." Mom stepped back from the hug, her blue diamond eyes locking with his brown ones, as she said, "And don't worry about Sandy! My sister has always been a free spirit, and very resilient! True, I've never seen her care as much for any man as she does for you, but she will bounce back. She has had her heart broken before, and you, Volodja, cannot fake a love that isn't in you. If you pretended to love Sandy while secretly loving Belle and she you, it would be much more disastrous in the long run for all three of you!" MOM sat back down and renewed munching on the half eaten s'more, saying, "Make yourself happy Volodja, for you are the only one who truly can, and if you do, you will make Belle happy too. Be true to Belle, and she will be true to you, and you both might reach living happily ever after." MOM glanced over at Alfred who was waiting impatiently just out of earshot, "It is a desire of all the women in my family, and we usually reach it, at least for awhile. As I said, all the women in my family have strong wills, but we are also extremely loyal. Be good to Belle and she will be good to you - forever if you want. Now my beloved Alfred has begun his pacing, and Belle must have at least one of us as her EGO psyche for her own well being. Besides, if you ever want to talk to me, I'm only an EGO away. Both Sophie and yourself are always welcome to visit! As to Lady's twins, I'm looking forward to helping them, as Belle as a woman really no longer needs my help, but if she does, I'm close by. Please think about what I said Volodja, and make both yourself and Belle happy." With that said, MOM finished her s'more, then picked up a materialized stick and poked the fire, looking absentmindedly into its flames as Volodja merely nodded farewell, with much to think on as he walked over to where Alfred paced. "A second please," Alfred stared at Volodja for a long moment as he loaded his pipe, lighting it, and beginning to puff on it as he considered his words, "I need to get back to Belle ASAP, but I think - no, I know - I can trust you as a gentleman and a scholar not to reveal what I'm about to tell you to anybody, especially Belle, for her own good. The Starr Project was not the only project where Belle was the prime subject. After I realized my creations were unstable, I started the EGO project at VBI. The VBI board of directors were at first reluctant to fund another project for a scientist they felt had failed them, until I convinced them that Project EGO was not building on an unsuccessful project but was a totally new project with great merit in itself. In truth, the whole purpose of the project was to repair the defects in both Belle and her sister, and in Belle's case, it worked, but only as long as the EGO psyche is sentient enough to be dedicated to that purpose. I put my consciousness into Belle's EGO for that very purpose, as well as her mother's as a failsafe, not for some misplaced desire for immortality, for believe me, being an EGO psyche is NOT that exciting, but to make sure that the EGO psyche is always monitoring and circumventing any problems having Volge genes spliced with human ones might create. As her creator who knows Belle's biology intimately, I was the best possible choice to be Belle's, shall we say, Regulator, and her mother second best not because of her knowlege but because she cares for Belle so much. As long as either MOM or I are Belle's EGO psyche, Belle should live to a ripe old age, maybe even longer." Alfred's pipe went out, so he reluctantly emptied it, saying with a grin, "I LIKE you my boy, and I firmly believe you are ARE the perfect man for Belle! You are learned and intelligent - the two don't always go together, believe me! Furthermore, looking at your medical records from Dr. Orion's files, you have no bad recessive genes. Most importantly, to only me perhaps, you are human, unlike Vo K'shaa, so Bravo Volodja! I know Belle thinks she is unable to ever have children, but I almost have that problem solved too, so you WILL have superior children together. Again, Bravo Volodja! However, we must get me back to Belle's psyche now, so I can repair any possible damage done by both MOM and myself being absent form Belle's EGO, soooooo - Chop, chop, let's get going!"

Volodja opened his eyes. The ceiling was the first thing he saw. When he looked to one side he could see Lady fallen asleep and slightly snoring. Looking to other side brought the glance of his brown eyes to the contact with Belle's diamond blue ones.
"Job well done," said Volodja to her. "Even if I say so myself. MOM is in Lady's mind, settling herself in and Alfred has returned and resumed his position as your guardian. I heard some good news and....received your parents blessing without even asking. Speaking the truth, I would never dared to ask myself, because I believed that I am not worth of your love, not to mention their approval. But results of our conversations were unpredictable - even Alfred accepted me. I do assume that his reasons might be a bit selfish but he said that he...likes me. That should make you careful about having me actually. I know that it was way too old fashioned and too...let's say that too androcentric of me to discuss the matter with your parents when we did, but if I had more guts, I would asked their approval anyway, because I feel that getting their permission is the right thing to do. I do apologize if I insulted you by doing that. I am talking too much and repeating myself." Volodja blushed...again.
Maybe he was way too old fashioned and even a bit too male centered (after talking with MOM he started to suspect that), but he felt that he should have asked for parents permission if he had courage to do it. He knew that Belle was mature woman and responsible for herself, but he felt that acting without asking her parents would have been dishonourable. Actually he had one more reason - it was the first time when parents actually gave their blessing to him. He always dreamed about asking parents to take their daughter out (and have their approval), but he never had a chance. Usually it was caused by the lack of mutual feelings. Somehow his love always seemed to be one sided. Not to mention the lack of parents in the world which survived an apocalypse.

Taffer routinely watched the weather ahead and monitored Atticus's piloting, noting for himself how quickly he learned the basics thanks to his previous experience. "We'll be landing at the Miguel Hidalgo Airport, or what still functional part was left of it. I've already called them and ordered a refuel, so the personnel and the equipment will be waiting for us and it will be a really short stop. No sightseeing, sorry. On our way back maybe, but this time we'll be taking off as soon as our tanks are full again."

Post by Vo Kshaa on Jul 18, 2015 22:28:25 GMT
Once Belle, Volodja and Lady had their desired EGO psyches in place, they received a message carried with a childish voice.
"Hi there! It's Lexy the spaceship. I was checking the hidden network in case there's a reply to Taffer's message, and suddenly I received an S.O.S! As a good spaceship, I had to respond! I found out it's an entire AI from an EGO and she was asking for help! Never heard they could travel like that! She told me her name is Shirra Wheels and she is the AI of Vo Kshaa's EGO unit. But her ID is completely different than the one I knew when she was here! But she still was in trouble and asking for help! I've downloaded her into my safe harbor and cut her from all communications as Taffer told me should be done to everything downloaded from the net until it's proven to be safe! I'm not sure she's safe and I don't talk to strangers, but she's asking to talk to someone on the base! I won't let her out of the harbor and won't let her send anything to you until you say me so, you can come here and talk to her in person! Me good?"
"Now what are we supposed to do here?" Vo looked around the room again. It was an empty room with a corridor leading to another empty room, but that second room was filled with holographic images of hellbugs of various kind. The only real things were exact copies of his favorite 16-round shotgun, Radiant Solstice Pulser and the Ironclad ARK grade shield. Vo took them immediately but frowned while examining them because ammo for those weapons was holographic as well.
"Fascinating", Doc commented, "I've always wondered how they see it. But answering your question, I think we should play this holographic training course to see how it works for you."
"Always wondered?" Vo frowned again replying mentally to his EGO unit, "I thought you told me you don't remember anything from your past life. And who are they who see something as you said?"
"Access denied", Doc muttered somewhat reluctantly. "I think I remembered or more likely felt something I shouldn't."
"So they hide something from you too", concluded Vo. "Anyway, let's pass through this "training" and be done with it."
Vo wasn't too fond of fighting virtual enemies with virtual bullets especially because he never could see them as even relatively believable. From the first days he remembered himself, he was able to tell any illusion from reality, be it a dream or hallucination or a holographic projection. Most of the time he could even control his own dreams, being able to fly around the scene to see it from different angles or switching between different dreams like TV channels or forcing himself to wake up if the dream was starting to become disturbing for him. His enhanced senses even added to this trait, giving him the ability to not only determine which is real and which isn't, but see what is there hidden behind the projection as well. But now he was at the lowest level of the bunker and he saw this "training" a good opportunity to explore it. While shooting virtual enemies, he was looking around carefully, trying to see behind the decorations if there could be any trace of decay or rust stains which could evidence that there's a leak or faulty sealing.
Soon his eyes found a door with distinctive rust stains on it. It was carefully hidden behind a texture of a stone wall, but Vo still saw through it. He jumped up to it, having a bunch of virtual skitterlings following him and then smashed them with the buttstock of his shotgun, "accidentally" hitting the door. From the sound he heard and from the kickback he felt from the hit he determined that there was some space behind the door and the door itself was not too strong, at least it was not sealed. He quickly returned to hunting down remaining enemies, pretending not having noticed the door and its properties he had just learned.
After the Monarch fell down, Vo exited the lower level of the bunker and took the steps back to his room. He didn't see any instructions on what to do with his newly acquired weapons and shield, so he just took them with him. A warm dinner was waiting for him in his room, sitting on top of an automated vehicle which was used as a dining table. Vo ate his dinner and let the automated table off then he dropped himself on his bed.
"Doc, how's the results of this training?" He asked more to kill time rather than having any interest in them.
"They tried everything they could to make those projection believable for you", Doc answered with enthusiasm. "But you didn't notice a single change, did you? As I said, it's fascinating."
"So what they plan to do next?" Vo asked already knowing the answer.
"Access denied, sorry", was the reply.
Vo sighed and kept lying on his bed and staring at the ceiling. For the whole time he was there he had not gained any useful information. He never had the answer who was they Doc sometimes was referring to, who his superiors were and what was the purpose of all those "tests" he was put through, how long it would last and what would happen after. His only hope was still only that door at the lower level which was not on the floor plan. He wasn't sure no one noticed his interest for it. It was possible that Doc had already noticed his trick and reported about it to his superiors. If he did, then the only way to escape would be to test the real deadliness of that "deadly force" they promised him for misbehaving. Also, he wasn't sure Shirra managed to escape the facility and wasn't intercepted on her way to their friends. If she failed, then they probably still assumed him dead. To top it all, he still didn't know if his beloved Belle is even alive or not. Last time he had seen her was seemingly long ago back in the City of Freedom. When that sharkgator incident happened, everyone of the team assumed Belle dead or missing and they were going to return back home. Only Vo had set his goal to determine what exactly happened to her and help her return in case she needed it. But he failed. He was following a very slim clue on her whereabouts when he was caught off guard and captured only to be tortured and almost killed. Back then, in his Indogene form, Doc mentioned that all Vo's friends were alive and well. Was he including Belle in that group? Or was the knowledge of Belle's death so obvious that he didn't even feel the need to mention it? Or was he just telling lies without any actual knowledge only to keep him calm? Now the poor EGO unit didn't remember anything from his past life or at least was pretending not to remember. All in all, Vo decided to do his best to get out of this lab. Then, with the help of his friends or without it, he would do his best to return to their base or at least join his friends wherever they are. And then, if his fiends didn't need his immediate help, he would continue on his quest on searching for Belle, the love of his life. If she's alive he would find her. If she's dead… he didn't think of what would he do then, but he was determined he wouldn't harm anyone except her murderers. If he failed on his way to achieve any of those goals he had set for himself, then at least he would be sure he did everything he could. Having his goals set this way, he felt his anxiety gradually went away and he felt into a dreamless sleep.

"Awesome" Replied Lady Christianna as she sat up to the childlike Lexy, the Vigilant's AI, answering Lexy's query as to how she did.
Belle Starr also sat up, adding, "Wonderful job Lexy - we'll be right down to talk to our visitor, but keep the security protocols going!"
As both ladies got out of their hospital beds, Belle sashayed over to Volodja, giving him a passionate kiss as Lady smiled enigmatically, but whose large pink eyes shot daggers at him, then Belle said, "Duty calls! I swear if its the Mistress of Judgment playing games again... well, lets just say she'll regret it! It seems like just the thing she would do, pretending to be poor dead Vo's EGO!"
With that said, a flash of red gleamed in Belle's diamond blue eyes narrowed in anger, a grim look on her pretty freckled face, as she turned on her heel and headed to the base hangar where the Vigilant was located, not looking or really caring if she was followed or not, for her total focus was on getting down to the truth of this latest mystery.

Post by Chase Lonehart on Jul 18, 2015 23:39:16 GMT
"It's Lonehart," Iri heard Chase tell the man. "Chase Lonehart. I haven't gone by Tom Cody in two months."
Iri made a mental note to herself to inform Belle and others that within the past two months, Chase had went back to his old name as well as no longer wearing a helmet, with the exception that a situation sprung up that called for it. She took a few steps towards him, folding her arms across her chest.
"As much as I appreciate Ms. Widowmaker's generosity, at this point I'm seeing what files are there. The fact of the matter is that Erika Widowmaker has a valid point on keeping you nearby, in case if I tried to pull some sort of trick. I will admit, to quote the Roman poet, Virgil, and in his native tongue: Quaeque ipse miserrima vidi et quorum pars magna fui."
Confusion crossed the eyes behind the big black rimmed frames of the glasses. She had to remind herself that most humans were not as extensively versed in other languages from their own planet. So, she chose to repeat it.
"I saw these terrible things and took great part in them," she translated. "The fact is that right now I'm running a search to look for anything that can help, which will take at most a couple of hours. Should I need your assistance, I will let you know. But for now, you are welcome to either sit and wait or you can find another task to fill your time.“
“I’ll wait,” he replied, finding a stool from one of the nearby tables. She knew he was the one who was going to keep an eye on her to make sure she didn’t make sense to just have the security office keeping an eye on hear.
She turned back to Chase to address his question.
"I am here because I believe that there may be an option on how to restore your memories here," Iri told him. She had to take a moment to collect herself in order to admit the next part. "I know that I swore to you that I would find a solution to restore you to how you used to be. However, with the past two months of researching and experimentation, there hasn't been any positive results. What I am doing here, is what you humans refer to as a 'desperate last chance'."
She turned away from him at that moment to look at the holographic interface. She couldn't look him in the eye, feeling ashamed for her failure.
"If I do not find anything here, then that means I have failed you, and there is no way to fix you," she continued. "And if I do find anything here, there is a good chance that the method was made through the cost of a lot of lives, or worse."
Iri felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked over at Chase, finding his hand on her.
"I know you've done nothing but your best," he told her. "I won't think of you any differently if you don't find anything. I'm still here, even if I don't remember who I am. I'm not expecting you to work a miracle. If you find something, then we'll see where it goes, even if it something that was horrible to create. Those lives are gone, and can't be helped."
Iri couldn't understand how Chase, in any version of himself, could forgive her so easily. It was as if the universe had somehow made a living being who couldn't hate her, no matter if she failed to keep a promise. She placed her gloved hand on top of his, lighting squeezing it to assure him she understood.

Post by Sandy Bell on Jul 19, 2015 0:14:29 GMT
Sandy Belle had never been a very good poker player. The expression on her pretty tanned face always gave her away. At the moment, Sandy tried her best to hide from the others that she was bleeding to death from the broken heart still beating in her chest, but her blue eyes gave it all away. As she sat in the plane cleaning and polishing her weapons over and over, she just couldn't really understand why Volodja abandoned their love so easily. She had rationalized it to him, forgave him for it, but never really understood the why of it. Sandy had really believed that their love was the real thing, but in a matter of days it was gone - vanished like a dream.
"Maybe he never loved me. Maybe it was pity all along - pity for the poor ghost girl, who was dying yet again," Thought Sandy to herself, "Pity at least makes some kind of sense."
Taffer communicated that they were landing for their fuel stop, which was the half way point to the mission, and she was grateful for it. Sandy was a professional soldier, and welcomed the return to order and action.
"The job of killing for a specific cause is SO much easier than living for something as amorphous as love," Thought Sandy sadly to herself.
"Taffer, sir," Said Captain Sandra "Sandy" Belle, glad to leave her future fate in the hands of others for now so she could just concentrate on keeping alive second to second, "I volunteer for guard duty while we are refueling!"
Lena Marr watched Sandy with unblinking long lashed sky blue eyes, then leaned over towards her with a serious look on her Casti chalk white face, saying, "You know... for a small price, with my knife, and a few little cuts, I can make sure HE never pokes his iron in another girl's fire. I can make sure HE never dips his cookie in another girl's milk. I can make sure HE never drives his train through another girl's tunnel. I can make sure HE never shoots his missile - "
"Okay, okay, I get your fucking point! And if he had a pet bunny rabbit, I could just boil it for Christ's sake!" Interrupted Sandy with irritation clearly in her voice, "Thank you very much, but if I need your damn services, I'll ask for them," Then Sandy leaned over to Lena, their faces inches away and said sternly, "However, if I ever hear that such a thing has happened to Volodja, I'll show YOU how a Casti girl can impersonate a slice of Swiss cheese!"
Lena sat straight back in her chair, a bewildered look on her face, replying, "Jeesh! I was only making a legitimate business offer, girl-to-girl! No need to get huffy!"
Strange enough, Lena was making a sincere offer, and was truly puzzled why Sandy didn't take her up on it.

Post by Lady Christianna on Jul 19, 2015 0:53:51 GMT
Lady Christianna sat on the floor of the Vigilant's bridge, her thin chalk white legs curled under her as she played jacks with Lexy, who looked like an adorable five year old girl. As the Casti child cried out gleefully as the ball bounced and she successfully grabbed two jacks before it bounced again, Lady had to remind herself the child was not real, but a hologram of the stratocarrier's AI. Even so, Lady kept an ear open to what was going on behind her, as Belle Starr and Volodja Uljanov sat in the pilot and co-pilot seats respectively as they questioned the EGO psyche calling herself Shirra Wheels stored in the Vigilant's safe harbor. "Okay, assumuing you are Shirra Wheels" Said Belle with more than a little skepticism in her voice, "Why is your ID different from the one in our records? Why are you here? And finally, convince me you are who you say you are. Vo got me a very special present once, and I never showed it to anyone, wanting it to be our secret love token that only we knew about, but I keep it with me always! You shared his mind at the time he bought it and gave it to me, so you should know what it is! What is it?"

Post by Vo Kshaa on Jul 19, 2015 9:00:50 GMT
A blurred, barely recognizable image of Shirra appeared on the screen. She looked frightened and her voice sounded hurried, as if she was afraid that something would cut her before she could tell everything that was important. "Hello friends! I'm here because Vo sent me to get help. He's alive but he's held as a prisoner in some kind of Indogene lab, somewhere in Canada. They were about to replace his EGO with something so he ordered me to find my way here and inform you while I still can. I'm sorry I could not determine his exact location because once I've escaped to the Net, some kind of security system started to chase me all over the Network. I had to bottleneck it at one of the relays and then overheat the device so I could not be chased further. Then I had to upload myself into a drive which was ready to be physically shipped to another town so that they lost my track. I can track my route all the way back to Helena City and then I think it was the relay somewhere to the North which I fried after I jumped from it. My best guess it is Calgary. That's all I can tell about the location I've started my way from. My ID is different from my original one because I had to rebuild myself fully to bypass the EGO jammer. That's why I could not use our usual group channels so I had to resort to the kindness of our dear Lexy to transfer my message. You can run any tests on me and I have a video fragment recorded from the time Vo was awake until he ordered me to escape and come here. But first of all, he asked me to tell you Belle. He loves you and he wants you to be happy. He didn't tell me why he urged me to tell you it this way, but I guess that's because he was afraid he'd never see you again. Now about your personal question. The gift you're talking about is definitely the blue crystal compact mirror he got you on a Lunar Base. It's a foldable hand mirror, and its crystal part can be uncovered and is sharp enough to be used as a cutting tool or a weapon and it has an engraving "I love you" on its rim in both English and l'Irathi. But he didn't buy it. He had programmed a sub-routine for the Progenitor Core to create it when it was working on building the base on the Moon. He took it from the niche in the base's wall where the Core was programmed to place it. I still have the copy of that code, so if you have a Progenitor Core simulation running somewhere, I can create you an exact virtual copy of it. On a side note, which he never had an opportunity to tell you, he had programmed it right after the spaceship has started and before your body was briefly overtaken by Sandy's psyche. When he gave that gift to you, he was rather embarrassed knowing Sandy's story by that time about how she had to kill someone he had sex with, with a mirror shard. So he was afraid gifting you a mirror with a sharp edge which can be used as a weapon could invoke some unfortunate implications. If you let me play the video fragment I had saved, you could hear the explanation Vo could get from those Indogenes on how he ended up there. It is still to be decided how truthful their words are but at least you'll have the same information Vo got by that time. I have to notice that some parts of Vo's voice are synthesised in that video as it were actually mental commands given to me so I had to convert them into voice to make them audible to you. That's in case you'll be running a voice comparison, please select the fragment where he's really talking to someone." If Belle commanded Shirra to play the video she could see the room through Vo's eyes, the Indogene Doc talking to him, see his own face in the "mirror" made of a camera and a screen, overhear the Indogene talk in their native language with Shirra's translation, and hear the last commands Vo mentally gave to Shirra before she went to standby mode.

"Time to do the right thing," muttered Volodja and said out loud: "If she is Shirra, then that means only one thing. Vo is alive and if he is alive then we can restore the situation which prevailed here before my entrance. He is and always will be your Prince Charming. Your true love. I got into the picture only because he was gone...temporarily. He was lifting you up to the heights and he made you happy. I would have been dragging you down because of my self destructive tendencies. Luckily that threat is removed now."
Volodja smiled when he remembered his conversation with MOM and her warnings and continued: "Your mother told me that I should make you happy. I guess that right way to make you happy is to step back, so you can be reunited with your true love. You don't have to blame yourself for things that happened between us - those few kisses we shared and a chance to hold your hand. And I am grateful for that opportunity. We didn't go any further from there, so you have been faithful to Vo. You kept loving him even if we all thought he was dead, so you have no reason to feel ashamed of yourself. I guess that my function was to keep you alive, relatively well and safe from other possible temptations until your Prince returns. I always imagined myself to be Odysseus, the great wanderer, but I wasn't. Hopefully I managed to avoid turning into Antinous, son of Eupeithes or Eurymachus who chased after heart of Penelope because of their ill intentions. It was an honour and privilege to serve you, Princess."
Volodja stood up, put his hand to his heart and lowered his head to the bow. That was the right thing to do, he assumed. Getting her Prince Charming back should make Belle happy again. They were meant to be together. As for Volodja...Belle and him opened the door into one possible future opportunity for both of them, but now that door was sealed again. And he can't go back to Sandy either. The bridges were burnt. Actually he regained his former status - he was alone once again. Just like when he arrived. At least he was not left not empty handed. He had a chance to love two most beautiful girls in what was left from the world - Sandra Bell and Belle Starr, enjoy the feeling being close to them and that was more than lot of guys ever get. But he wasn't meant to be an item with Sandy nor Belle.
Volodja rose his head and went silent. He had Sophie with him and his faithful pistol and his sapper shovel, so he was prepared for any surprises, when he takes his walk outside their fortress. And he will return after clearing his mind and easing pain in his heart. Doing the right thing doesn't always make one to feel good about it. But that's how he always did - he took some time to ponder about possible solutions to the problems he faced. And he knew for sure what happened last time when he told about his hidden feelings - Belle loves Vo and she did the right thing by rejecting him. Now it's his turn to act right, step back and leave those two who were meant to be together, alone. Quietly as a shadow he removed himself from Belle's vicinity and closed the bridge door behind him.

"Well, this is Shirra for sure! She wasn't tricked by the 'bought' line either, as to the blue crystal compact! However, her memory still could have been tampered with and this is all a trap," Mumbled Belle Starr out loud, feeling the compact in her coat pocket to reassure herself it was still there, then noted, "There is an Indogene state up there around Calgary, and I'm pretty sure VBI leased a factory up there manufacturing weapons based on Votan technology and Indogene designs. Wait - what did you say Volo?" Belle didn't realize the implications of his words until she heard the door of the Vigilant's bridge close, then was torn as to whether to run after him, or continue the investigation. Belle decided to do both. Belle pleaded with Volodja through their EGOs, "I don't know what my mother said to you, but I'm pretty sure she didn't say running out the door at the first sign of trouble in our relationship would make me happy! First, we don't know if Vo is alive or not! I saw him drown! If by some miracle he is alive, he sounds like he's in pretty bad straits and I can't rescue him alone from whoever has him! Second, I still think this is some ploy of the Mistress of Judgment! This playing with our minds and our feelings is right up her alley! If so, I want some payback and I would think you would too! Third - and this one is a doozey - I love you, and I'm pretty sure you love me too! Isn't that something worth fighting for, not something you just walk away from?" Belle took a deep breath, then said, "You have to make up your own mind on that I guess! Me, I have a mystery to solve and maybe either a rescue or a payback mission to organize, and I sure as tooting could use your help, but that too is up to you!" Belle forced Volodja from her mind to attend to the immediate business at hand, ordering through conventional communications, "Lexy download Shirra into the dream machine and ask Pyotr to have it ready to be placed back on my neck for transportation and communication, but with the failsafe switch we discussed, then apprise Atticus and Erika of the situation - Chloe, pack you bags sweet pea for a trip up north, and make sure you bring really warm clothes and your tool kit, as I'm going to need your hacker skills I think - Trevor, can't small talk at the moment, but could you please set up VBI fast transportation, paperwork and introductions for me for an immediate visit to our Calgary plant, including any VISA's I and my crew may need? You're a sweetheart! - Chris, would you get the VBI chopper ready for immediate takeoff, with pilot of course! Thanks as always!" "I can fly you," Offered Lady Christianna. "Appreciate it honey, but y'all need to stay here for two reasons," Said Bele with a smile, "First, y'all are in command of the base if Volo comes with me or doesn't come back from his walk - " "Who? Me?" Asked Lady incredulously, her big pink eyes getting bigger. "Don't look like that at me Lady, you can do this! You are an active member of the team, and have been doing great at it! I have the utmost confidence in you!" Retorted Belle, "And second, Atticus would tan my hide if I took you into danger in your family-way condition." Belle thought to herself, "And into a mission woefully undermanned." Belle had a sudden thought, and rushed out of the Vigilant and down the hall to where Kaj, the suicidal bioman, was incarcerated, Belle waved the two guards away, and entered his prison quarters. "Kaj, I need you! The rest of the team are occupied getting back Erika's grandchildren, Kara's children, back! Vo K'shaa may be alive and a captive, or this is a hoax and a trap, but I have to find out which and rescue him if it's the former! I suspect the Mistress of Judgment is involved either way, and yes, that is the same Mistress of Judgment that hurt Kara so badly! I could really use your muscle, big guy, and I won't ask you to kill anybody as I know that goes against your grain, but you don't have any qualms about hitting a few bad guys, do you? Will you please come with me?" With that said, Belle held out one delicate pale hand to the big Bio-man, hoping he would take it.

"I will help you Belle," said Volodja through an EGO link. "I agree that best thing to do is to help to rescue Vo as a token of my...feelings. You two were an item before I crawled out from my crate and I know that he means a world to you. No charge. No small script on the contract. I won't walk away and leave you into trouble." Volodja was sure that there was no relationship meant to be between Belle and him. Vo was her Prince and and he wasn't. And since Vo was alive, Volodja had no right to think about Belle as a woman. Last time he did it, made Belle to disappear. And Vo disappeared after that. But Belle and Vo never broke up and that means they are still a couple.
But all the trouble he caused back then meant that Volodja has to be for Belle on this mission. He helped Sandy to get back her body, even when he broke her heart and now he can help Belle and Vo together again. He knew how Belle loved him and knew about Vo's feelings for her, so his fight was lost before it could even begin. But if he wanted to remain to be a honourable man and show how much Belle meant to him then he had to help her, pay his debt to her and be with her to the end of the mission. He can't let her act alone or only with few crew members, while he has a quite steady arm and not so steady conscious which is able to cope with guilt after he kills someone.
Instead of a desert walk, he went into his quarters and sighed at memories there. But clenching his teeth helped a bit to concentrate on important things like getting his gear ready. He needed to take only few weapons and armour with him. Rest of his belongings can stay behind. Others can decide what they will do with it - throw it to the dump or keep them as a part of exhibition of his personal museum after he is gone. After he has done his last good deed here, he is free to go. If he is out of picture for good, Sandy will forget him faster (if she hasn't thrown him out of her mind and heart already) and he can't endanger Belle's relationship with Vo. Everyone should be happier after he is not around any more. This place became his home, but maybe is better to be far away and miss home than stay here and complicate lives of the others with his presence. But he will have to wait until he helps Belle to get Vo K'shaa back.

In Fortress K'shaa, the Bioman and former Security Chief, known as Kaj Oenfer, is sitting in his room in the Psych Ward where The Director of Security had placed him under suicide watch. He had just had a visit with Kara, Erika Widowmaker's troubled daughter, when Belle Starr walks into his room, and stands in front of him with her arms crossed in as she adresses him.
Will you please come with me?"
With that said, Belle held out one delicate pale hand to the big Bio-man, hoping he would take it. Kaj looks up at her and says in his usual calm and caring voice, "Director Starr, I know how you felt when Miss Widowmaker had you locked up, and I must admit I felt the same way, at first, when Captain Batman, excuse me, I guess that is not the right title any longer. I heard the guards say that it is once again Commander Batman. I also heard that he got married to Lady Christianna on the Vigilant during your return from your last mission, however I have not had a chance to ask Doctor Von Eschen yet if those rumors are true. Anyways, back to my point. I did feel the same as you. Yet I am now fine with it, for Doctor Von Eschen has allowed me to see Kara, and after our first visit after my huge fuckup, actually went so well, he has allowed us to have every meal together in her room. I would hate to miss those meals with her. However she is married and although she does not talk about him, even when family is brought up, I should respect that marriage. After all she must love him to have married him and had his children. Not to mention he is a real person and I am just a machine.
I still say I am a malfunctioning machine, even though Kara says otherwise, however that is beside the point. The point is that it would not be right for me to destroy her marriage, no matter my feelings, so it would be best if I leave the base. Even if it is only for a little while to join your mission, under your supervision. Besides i have already lost Miss Widowmaker's trust and earned her wrath and hatred because of how badly I handled things with Kara at first. So it is probably best if I do not aggravate her any further, or she may decide to change her mind about letting me see Kara regularly, and I am still not sure how Commander Batman managed to convince her to do so, but I doubt even he could convince her to do so again, if I further upset her.
So to address your request. Yes, I will go on your mission, if for no reason other than to give Kara time to think about her family and marriage without me and my feelings distracting and confusing her. Besides I always do what I can to help those in need. Not to mention it does currently feel good to be needed, by those I was starting to think of as family, again even if it is just temporary. Obviously you need me, if you are here despite the location of my residence. If your Vo K'shaa is alive and captive, then he also needs help. I am perfectly fine with knocking people's heads together, and if my strength is needed to rip open a cell door or something, then I will do so; but you are right, I refuse to kill again unless I absolutely have to, to save or protect an innocent."
Anger now showing in his voice, for the first time since Belle has known him and perhaps for the first time since he was activated, Kaj snaps out, "However if this does turn out to be another ploy by the Mistress of Judgement, then I will make her pay for everything that she has done to you, Vo K'shaa, Erika Widowmaker, Lady Christianna, and most importantly Kara and her children, even if I have to strangle the Mistress with my bare hands!!!" With that, Kaj stands up slowly and takes Belle Starr's hand.
Then he looks around and as they head for the door he says, once again in his calm and caring voice, "I am sorry but I am extremely underequipped. All my gear, including clothes, were security issue and I am no longer security. So Commander Batman has confiscated everything. So lead the way, but forgive me for wearing this white Psych Ward issue jumpsuit, but it is the only clothing I have in my possession. Besides the only weapons I carried were a sidearm and a stun baton, and I am guessing I will need more than that for your mission. However, it appears that I will be in your custody, so I will use and wear whatever equipment that you feel most safe trusting me with, given that I am considered a mentally troubled person at best and a dangerous and malfunctioning machine, to be terminated, at worst."

"Ein moment, bitte." Tall, thin but still majestic figure of Wolfram von Eschen appeared to the doorway of his office: "You are taking Kaj away without consulting me first. And does Volodja knows about it?" Belle and Kaj looked at each other and then Wolfram. Belle was so carried away with preparations of her mission so she just forgot inform the local god in white lab coat about taking Kaj to the field trip. She opened her rose petal mouth, forming perfect O first, but before she could say a word, Belle and Kaj heard Wolfram's laughter. "Of course he can go, Liebchen," Wolfram said between laughing. "A bit fresh air and doing something else than staring at the ceiling can work miracles. Besides. If he wanted to kill himself..." "Then he would done it already," said Volodja's calm voice. "If one has reasons then one acts and finds measures. That jumpsuit can give enough material for a rope. And rope in hands of somebody who is desperate is enough to open the door into eternity. Dead man doesn't care any more, what he wears. And tearing jumpsuit into a rope material is not forbidden by Kaj's protocol, I assume. Believe me - I know a lot about being depressed and even suicidal. Welcome aboard, Kaj. By mu opinion you can have a gun, because I seriously doubt that you are going to use it against us or yourself."
