As Belle Starr followed Volodja through the buried television station to its basement, Lena Marr stood on the roof of the car parked outside, playing with her decoy. Being entertained was more important than being warm to Lena, so she had exited the car and was testing the range of her decoy in the snow covered area around the car, aiming it at a copse of trees, and pleasantly surprised how far it went. She was even more thrilled when her EGO explained to her how she could exchange places with the decoy while it was still moving, however she was a little disappointed that on the roof of the car the decoy only went to the edge and then stopped. Lena supposed that might be useful in some circumstance, but she couldn't thing of one at the moment. "I've tried the EGO powers of blur and decoy," Thought Lena to herself scanning the horizion for any threats from the rooftop of the car as she waited for her EGO power to recharge, "So that leaves overcharge and cloak." "You are such a natural with these powers," Encouraged Pride, her inner voice currently acting as her EGO's psyche, "What do we try next?" Lena took out her quickblaster, closing one long lashed sky blue eye as she took aim at a large tree in the nearby copse, saying to herself, "I think overcharge..."

Stairs, corridors and more stairs. And few dusty rooms and then more stairs. And all of them were empty and covered with dust. That was everything Belle and Volodja met on their way. Only footprints they saw were left by Pyotr Yershov who was last living being in that abandoned TV station before Belle and Volodja come to give this old lady her moment of being useful and glorified once again. "Got to love this pre war technology," said Volodja when looking at emergency generators, covered with thick layer of dust. "Usually it's reliable and not that complicated that even I can handle it. A diesel engines! Who would think that I see Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel's invention here. The diesel engines used to have the benefit of running more fuel-efficiently than gasoline ones due to much higher compression ratios and longer duration of combustion. That meant the temperature rose more slowly, allowing more heat to be converted to mechanical work. Now we are on petrohol of course, but I am glad to witness part of history which we can put into a good use as long as we find some fuel." They looked around and finally discovered fuel canisters in one of corners. Volodja lifted one up and shook it. Splashing sound revealed that there was at least some of liquid left in there. Volodja opened the lid and sniffed: "Do I smell diesel here? And I do. You know, dear Tinkerbelle, that Army vehicles used diesel because of its lower flammability risks and the engines higher provision of torque and lower likelihood of stalling. That means we can keep those engines running without taking a risk that something will blow up while we make reality TV. And I do apologize for that lecture I just gave you. I got carried away again." After his most sincere apology he finally gained some sense to close his trap and start to work instead of another history lesson. Volodja opened one canister after another and poured diesel into fuel tanks. Then he examined the switch board managed to find correct panel and turned generators on. After some coughing, motors started to purr like bunch of well fed cats and power was back on. It won't last forever but Belle and Volodja needed living TV station for only one important broadcast. They never intended to provide Defiance with a full time program. "I think we are done here. Prepare for a grand show, Tinkerbelle," said Volodja before grabbing her hand - he didn't knew why he did it, but it sure felt good when he did - and both of them hurried towards their destination - the TV studio where cameras and limelights were waiting for Belle Starr. Studio was empty because lonely skeleton behind news anchor desk with an old revolver laying on the floor by it's side doesn't count as a company. "Sorry old boy," muttered Volodja, lifting remains of long time ago deceased human being gently from it's chair and placed most of it to the floor. Rest of the skeleton dropped there by itself. Volodja checked cameras, switchboards and rest of the equipment. Abandoned long ago it was intact and still FUNCTIONAL as Volodja stated with a grin on his handsome face.

"It's all good plans Atticus", Taffer answered him, "But I tend to disagree on the smuggling part. Askaru knows his trade for sure and if we happened to know about Skarr's visit, then he knows about it for sure. That means he hid Erika's grandchildren somewhere Skarr would never find or set them moving in case he sees it safer for them. He definitely sees a better picture from his side now and it's not in our interests to tell him if he should move them somewhere or keep them hidden.
Lima is an independent city and it stays that way at least for now. If that changed somehow, I would know. This means Skarr won't be allowed to perform full-scale military operations or searches all around the city as he might want to. The city is rather criminalized and tends to be somewhat anarchic, but that doesn't mean crime lords would tolerate someone from the officials poking into their affairs and eating into their income. The way they stay independent while being so close to the VC evidences they have enough means to fend off such intruders.
All that means what we'll be facing from Skarr's side is some covert operation, even of a lesser scale than we saw in Freedom. They could block a couple of entrances to the city, but they definitely won't be able and won't be allowed to create a complete blockade. We still will be able to enter the city and travel around it even if Skarr's people would actively search for us. It will be safer for us to move through the city than for a civilian with kids even under protection of some mercs or gangsters. We'd better reach their hiding place ourselves and then move them out under our guard than making them moving without it. I'll leave a message in the Network for Askaru to read so that he knows we're coming, and if he had any special intel on where we could find them he would contact me back when he ensures it's safe to.
As you have guessed already, I'm coming with Erika. I know where we can find Askaru and I have a couple of trusted contacts there in case we'll need more information. I think we can discuss the details on our meeting at the base. If there's no other urgent matters, I'm going to take a nap. I'd like to be well-rested before our flight back to the base."

Gunshot and sounds of something heavy blown into pieces caught Marcel's attention. He turned his head and saw his girl Lena Marr victoriously by the smoking of remains of something what only few seconds ago used to be a tree.
"Hee-hoo!" she yelled and made couple of dance moves, hands still orange from Overcharge. "Look what I just did, My Love. EGO powers are ASWSOME!"
"Indeed, My Love," replied Marcel. "Shame to see such amount of firewood is going to waste." Suddenly he spotted an approaching vehicle. Another Beast army patrol headed towards them. They obviously heard the explosion or saw the special effects and hurried to check on their outpost."
"Lena-darling. Time to test your new powers in the battle. Enemy vehicle at three o'clock," was Marcel's EGO to EGO message when he grabbed his sniper rifle again and aimed it. His shot created a small bullet hole into vehicles wind shield and huge red cloud of blood, because driver's brains were splattered all over the interior. Vehicle rammed a huge tree and was abruptly stopped. Remaining enemies jumped out and scattered all over the area trying to hide behind trees and rocks because Marcel's first shot showed that they had to deal with a really good sniper.

Belle Starr was a natural as a news anchor, sitting comfortably before the cameras as she reviewed her script in her mind. She knew she had to be convincing, and although she was known as a Frontier Corporation News special reporter in the Bay Area, most of the folks in Defiance did not. The Beast and his Votan Collective army was a real threat, and although she was unsure the Omec, T'evin, was a threat as well, Belle still felt the authorities of Defiance needed to know he was wandering in the nearby collapsed gulanite mines.
Before Voldja could say action and begin the broadcast, Belle swiped the errant blond lock from in front of her blue diamond eyes, smiling warmly as she remarked,"Y'all know Volo, I LIKE your lectures! A person can't learn nothing if they don't listen to folk who know something!"
Volodja smiled back at her, then yelled "action" and she began her news broadcast. Since they only had a limited amount of power, she kept it terse but convincing, and hoped that the details she gave would help the innocents of Defiance set up a defense against the Beast and his forces. When she had finished, Volodja called "cut", and that it was a "take". Belle smiled at the enthusiasm in him, just one of his many qualities that endeared him to her.
Belle got up, pleased with a job well done, and hoped that the message got through to both the people and the authorities of Defiance. Suddenly, Belle acted on impulse, running up to Volodja and embracing him, giving him a long passionate kiss, then as a red blush spread from her swan like neck to her pretty freckled cheeks, she explained, "For luck! I know one's supposed to do it before one does something one needs luck for, but I was too nervous then!"
Belle smiled hesitantly, knowing it was a weak explanation for stealing a kiss at best, but not repentant for it in the least. She felt the electricity in the kiss, from the tips of her pale toes to the top of her blond tousled head, and in her heart, she hoped he had felt it as well.

Belle Starr and Volodja Uljanov stood in the middle of studio, cameras already switched off, looking into each other eyes, when last drop of fuel was burned out, emergency generators stopped and old TV station went into hibernation again. Then Belle approached him and embracing him, pressed her rose petal lips against his and they kissed passionately.
Volodja was caught into the warm pink cloud of bliss when he felt sweet taste of Belle's lips on his. Living lightning passed his body, starting from his mouth, reaching his toes after that and ending with an explosion in his head, making it dizzy. Maybe that's why he prolonged that kiss, they shared, as much as possible. After it ended and his lips let her's free from the lock, Volodja still looked into Belle's diamond blue eyes and replied to her after she said that she was too nervous to kiss him for a good luck before the broadcast:
"I think we need all the luck we can have, because we must reach back intact. It would be a real shame to die after those moments we just experienced so that kiss was most appropriate and I...That broadcast was extremely important and the camera loves you. Everyone loves you. We did a great job at warning people of Defiance.
The rest is up to our audience now. I really hope that they watched, listened and didn't thought that Orson Welles was reborn to recreate H. G. Wells's "The War of the Worlds" using the combination of the news bulletin form of the performance with the between-breaks dial spinning habits of listeners when he created that radio drama. Panic was reportedly spread among listeners who believed the fictional news reports of a Martian invasion. What you told them was true and you told it really convincingly so they MUST believe you. If people believed the fictional danger then they should react to the real warning adequately."
He removed his lips from Belle's some time ago but forgot to release his hands which were holding her and they became too big and clumsy when he discovered them still around her and Volodja didn't know how to remove them without Belle noticing it. And in his heart Volodja knew, he didn't want to remove them at all.

I look at Taffer intently. "You know your contact and Lima more than I do. I was only ever there to kill certain people taking advantage of it's criminal independence, and I never spent more than a few weeks there. Besides those visits were several years apart and I haven't been there in over 4 years. However I will be going with you and Erika if possible, but that will be discussed more later, as you pointed out. Even if you and your great piloting skills are going, it would probably still be a good idea to give me a crash course on piloting whatever ship we plan on taking. It's good to have as many pilots as possible. With my helicopter and small plane flying skills, great reflexes, and perfect memory...barring some memory lapses of older memories for medical reasons, I should be able to at least do a decent job at piloting whichever aircraft I get that crash course on.
Anyway, Lady has orders to get us out of this place as soon as our little broadcast party returns. So if it stays quiet then you have time for your nap. So go sleep and if we need any of our off-duty command team, including you, we will call. I suggest you show Petrovich to his private quarters as well, if you haven't already. That way, he and his wife can get a little more comfortable before his talents and skills are needed again. Goodnight Taffer, and Petrovich, welcome aboard. Please take time to think about what I offered you." After Taffer and Petrovich leave me alone in the Mess, I just sit there to think about the conversation I had with the waiter and Petrovich, as well as my conversation with Taffer.

Lena cloaked, getting behind their enemies and then blasting them in the back of their heads in quick succession. She had no qualms doing so, but not because she believed they would have done the same to her if they had half a chance, which they would have. Instead, Lena believed that there were winners and losers in the world, with Marcel and Lena being the winners and their enemies being the losers. She firmly believed it was their manifest destiny to win in time whatever they wanted, although she wouldn't intellectualize it in that way. Lena just instinctually knew it to be true. Also, Lena liked to see their heads burst like over ripe melons. Lena sported her wicked grin as she looted their bodies, thinking, "I could definitely get used to this." "Me too!" Replied Greed who was currently dominating her EGO psyche. Meanwhile down below, the lights suddenly went out as the generators ran out of fuel. Startled, Belle pulled out of Volodja's grasp, unslinging her SMG-ECC and turning on the flashlight attachment, saying, "Um... I guess we better get out of here before... well, anything else happens!" Belle led the way with her flashlight to the ladder leading to the surface, admonishing herself all the way, thinking, "Oh my God, I've turned into a brazen hussy! Here I am trying to steal Aunt Sandy's boyfriend, just as she is about to get her body back so she and Volo can be a real human couple! And poor Vo is not even cold in the grave yet! How despicable is that? How low can a human being get? What the heck was I thinking?" "What the heck were you thinking?" Interjected MOM, her EGO psyche. "I guess I wasn't thinking," Thought Belle sadly to herself as she began what seemed to be to her a long climb to the surface.

"Stupid, stupid, stupid," echoed in Volodja's head with every step he made. "You were trying to take an advantage of this poor confused girl and hurt everyone by doing that. Fortunately she had common sense to release herself from your grasp. Just make sure that you don't do that again and everything returns back to normal, although normality is something rare in these days. Quit thinking about things which might happen. They didn't happened and that's all. Bank is closed, you missed your chance and it's better that way. Besides - this is not Lady and the Tramp story or a Chaplin movie where wandering tramp catches the heart of someone from upper class than him." Volodja followed Belle still feeling lost like Theseus in the Labyrinth, because following Ariadne's thread wasn't very helpful this time. Probably because made inappropriate move to her and received strangely entangled thread as a punishment. But he deserved that any any possible way because of his sins. At least Theseus avoided transforming into Minotaur and attacking Ariadne. And fortunately he was few steps behind Belle in half darkness where he obviously belonged (because he hid himself into darkness often so lately) and nobody could see his shame.

Marcel Lestrange felt proud of Lena. She really knew how to use her new powers in the battle by blasting enemies one by one and now she was busy gaining trophies again. Marcel could not wish for better partner to himself. Smart, courageous and so sexy...Which made Marcel to wait a bit more until Lena was done with looting. Then he went to her, finishing a moaning wounded off with a single knife strike on his way. Reaching to her, Marcel slid his hands around her, kissed her hard on her white lush lips, using little tongue play as a teaser and manoeuvred them both to their car. He used his free hand tu pull the door open and whispered:
"I want you Lena. Right here on the battle field. Unlike those good doers, I won't hesitate on important moments like this to show my feelings for you in a straightforward way. I bet they just hold each other hands or something like that and even then they are blushing." He kept kissing Lena and he used a chance to slide his hands all around her body under her 7th Legion outfit while she was thinking about Marcel's sudden proposal.

As Marcel led Lena to the car and opened the door for some impulsive sex in the warmth of the car, Lena laughed wickedly as she pushed him backwards into a cold snow bank, jumping and straddling him as she began to quickly unzip his pants, saying with a mischievous glint in her sky blue eyes, "Don't worry about the chill dear, I'll keep you hot." After Marcel entered her and as Lena gyrated on top of him, Lena was exhilarated by both the sensual motion and the contrast of the freezing cold of her surroundings to the heat of the moment. Under the circumstances of numbing pain and sweaty pleasure, it didn't take long for her to climax and for her to collapse panting on top of him. As fate would have it, Belle struggled over a taller snow drift next to them just then, her SMG at the ready, followed closely by a grim Volodja also armed for trouble. Belle's beautiful blue diamond eyes widened in shock as her rose petal lips formed a perfect "o", as she stammered, "I - I heard moans and thought y'all might be hurt - or something!" Lena almost laughed at Belle's discomfort, except when she glanced down and noticed Marcel's face as it was turned towards the couple on the nearby hill. It was clear to Lena that Marcel was looking only at Belle, and the gleam in his eyes and the wry smile on his lips were more appreciative than anything else. "What is it about Belle that make men go stupid around her?" Lena asked herself with a frown on her lush lips. "I know Marcel loves me, and we just had mad passionate sex which I'm pretty fucking sure we both enjoyed immensely, but still when she appears, he gets all gaga over her. I can tell from more than just his eyes, because now little Marcel is all excited again! Damn it! Is it the blond hair? The big blue eyes? The fact she doesn't walk but sashays into a room? I can dye my hair! I got blue eyes! I can walk like that... I think so anyway! No, if I did all those things and was naked to boot, all the men would still be looking at her with their tongues hanging out to the floor, so it has to be something else about her! But what? On second thought, I don't care! I just really, really, REALLY got to kill her!" "Yeah, we got to kill her, maybe sooner than later," Agreed Envy, the voice in her head now controlling her EGO psyche.

"Belle and Volodja look nice together," thought Marcel looking at her with a smile. But after that his glance fell to Lena's half naked body (the downer part, if someone REALLY must know that) and he felt sudden blood rush going to his downer regions again when he thought about their intercourse right in the battlefield, surrounded by snow and dead bodies. "But Lena is something different than Belle. And I am an opposite of Volodja. Voldoja Le Fou might love and watch Belle but he will never be able to touch her in the way I do with Lena. That's for sure. So once again I am more man than he is ever going to be, because unlike those two we can have some really exciting times together with my beloved Lena," he thought with a satisfied smile when his hand stroke gently Lena's silky skin on her buttocks, slid around her right hip and covered her most strategic part after reaching there.
"Nous excusons," said Marcel to Belle and Volodja in a calm voice like being spotted during or after having hot sex in the cold snow of the battlefield was something common for him. "You were getting late, leaving us to fight with another truck full of uninvited guests. But unlike some people, we can fight efficiently, so we had plenty of time afterwards and Lena and I knew how to use it in most pleasurable way. You sent the message, I assume. Otherwise you would not been here.
Mind to wait until we get dressed? Of course you are not. By the way, Volodja. That glance in your eyes suits more to a funeral service than a victory party. Stomach-ache? Personal problems? You always have some and you have to blame your hypertrophied conscious for that. Luckily Lena and I are in good terms with our conscious. Merde! Almost forgot!" said Marcel searching for a cigarette, putting it into his mouth and lighting it with his left hand, because his right one still covered Lena's nude downer part.
"Polite people do not look when others are getting dressed, so turn your glances away. Yes, there is a lot to see here, but that does not mean that you have to stare." When Belle and Volodja turned their glances away, Marcel stood up got himself properly dressed and watched Lena do the same, enjoying what he saw. When Belle and Volodja were allowed to turn around, Marcel and Lena were busy kissing, Marcel's left hand holding his cigarette and tapping ashes to the snow.

Volodja Uljanov forced himself to smile after Marcel Lestrrange took a liberty to perform his merciless deconstruction on his personality. "Post coitum omne animal triste est, sive gallus et mulier (After sex all animals are sad except the cock and the woman)," muttered Volodja. "Supposedly Galen said that. That Greek physician from the 2nd century AD who linked the four temperaments sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric and melancholic to bodily dispositions. Sometimes - without the cock and woman add-on - Aristoteles is named as the author of that proverb. Whoever the author is, he obviously didn't met our Marcel. Although... I could see some serious similarities between the words "gallus" and "Gallia" (Gaul), because France was part of ancient Gaul territory with Belgium and other countries. And Marcel is a Frenchman." Smile on Volodja's handsome face went a bit wider. He assumed that name Gallia was derived from Proto-Celtic "galn-" (to be able), but in the other hand "gallus" meant inhabitant of Gaul and a rooster or a cock at the same time. Marcel was surely acting like a cock at moment. Maybe someone foresaw birth of Marcel Lestrange. He shared his thoughts with Belle who looked at him questioningly when they had to look the other way while Lena and Marcel pulled their pants up. "Ex Gallo lac et ova" (cock's milk and cock's eggs, meaning nonsensical hopes), Volodja suddenly though about some of his recent thoughts and dreams. But he managed to hid that bitter thought behind the smile when he turned around after Marcel asked Belle and him to do so. When they were allowed to turn around and they saw Lena and Marcel kissing, Volodja thought about the kiss he received from Belle and decided to treasure it as another precious moment in his memory. He went to Marcel's car, opened the back door, sat inside and selected an E-book on his data pad. This time he chose Laurence Sterne's "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" Maybe Sterne's original storytelling manner will ease the burden on his mind. Reading beats sitting in darkness by mountain high.

Not being learned in Latin, Belle didn't understand Voldja's crude comment to Marcel. Her uncle and his VBI scientists didn't think that understanding a "dead" language was necessary for a super-soldier to know, although he did insist she learn the arts and be skilled in dance. Belle thought it odd later, when she found out her genes were spliced with Volge, that he would do so, but then her father and uncle wanted her to be the ultimate "human" weapon, so she guessed that included being knowledgeable in the arts and sciences.
"Well, if y'all are... finished, we better get back to the others!" Remarked Belle as she go back into the backseat of the car with Lena after the latter got dressed, avoiding Lena's long lashed sky blue eyes.
Lena on the other hand stared at the still blushing Belle with a cat-ate-the-canary grin that said to all that saw it, "I got some and it's obvious you didn't! Take THAT, Miss Belle Starr!"

Belle Starr contacted Lady Christianna in the cockpit of the Vigilant through their EGOs, then Lady contacted Atticus and Taffer, saying, "Message sent. Away team on it's way back. All systems go." With that Lady sat back in the pilot's seat, feeling quite pleased with herself, her Mona Lisa smile firmly in place as she thought to herself, "All systems go. Always wanted to say that."
