"Umm, hello mate. Seems it's time to move now, to those wondrous medics at the San Fran base, you know. I asked staff to help me relocate your children to the roller. Please, come with me and look after them while we're returning to the aircraft," Raizar said.
Erika Widowmaker looked up, her large jade eyes focusing on him for the first time since he approached her as she was deep in thought pondering the wisdom of Taffer's words, and wondering at her place in this new world she had suddenly discovered herself in. She was used to having an established life and routine suddenly destroyed by events, as that had already happened three times before during her lifetime; the first time, it was the uprootment from her home planet, the second, the end of the Pale Wars, and the third was the death of her husband and the epidemic that decimated her small fishing village that she had called home and killed her third child. Now it had happened again, and this time her two remaining children were endangered by forces beyond her control, and Erika was a women who hated not being in control of her circumstances.
Erika smiled absentmindedly at Raizar when she realized he was talking to her, "Thank you, Raizar, for the help moving them, and I know they will thank you personally when they are able. I wanted to remark about how professional you were during the conflict, but things got so... complicated right after the battle." She hesitated a moment before continuing, hoping she wasn't overstepping with her next remarks, "You know, you could do a lot worse than taking a permanent position with this team, and I'm sure Taffer would give you one if you wanted it, as we are now very shorthanded after our... losses. A mercenary's life is unstable at best, wondering where your next scrip note will come from. Furthermore, this team is talented but could only benefit from your discipline. I have no authority to offer you such a position, but I still believe it is yours if your want it. Anyway, I know it is not my business, and forgive me for intruding in yours, but I for one hope you will seriously consider what I have said."
Erika stood up, busying herself with caring for her children all the way from the ride to the plane through the flight to San Francisco, doing what she could to make them comfortable during the flight, but despairing in silence over being unable to do anything substantive in their recovery.

Volodja opened his eyes and yawned. He slept most of the time since they left Freedom. Actually he fell asleep in the chair during that pow wow earlier. His mind and emotions were cleared with single slap from Sandy, but his body was really tired. That damned vacation was really exhausting experience and made him to pass out in the first opportunity. His friends and family had to drag his sleeping body into their ship and secure him to seat, so he could continue his well earned rest.
Sophie was busy with decorating her new bottega and cursed quietly. Results were too eclectic, because she wanted everything she liked, to be there. Only problem was that her objects of desire were from different eras and were hard to mix, but actually it didn't matter. If Leonardo had same opportunities as her, he would probably do the same thing. Finally she was done and results reminded her Volodja's mind - lot of different things put together, ready to use when needed.
Volodja nudged Atticus, "You know, Giant Sr. You better start to look for cigars soon. And pick the fine ones." And he chuckled a bit.
He needed to think about few things, before taking another ride to land of dreams. Evil bitch wants the baby and she counts on Sandy to tapper with Lady's birth control. That gives them some time to stall the Mistress, because it could still take time to get Lady pregnant and she will take that into account. Sandy succeeded in a first try obviously, but Mistress doesn't have to know that. Next he must ask Sandy about her communication canals with Mistress. How they can establish contact, when needed? Base must have inner security check and very through one. Mistress might hired somebody there too, just to be secure. No need to take her allies under custody through if they are revealed - that will alert her immediately. Must feed them with disinformation.
Now the question when she will act? Stealing a baby would be easier approach, but...but Mistress sees Lady as her heir, so she wants her too and since Mistress is a fanatic, which blurs her judgement, she probably wants to be there when Lady gives a birth, so she could say: "I was there, when new ruler was born and helped to deliver him to his empire." Seemed to be logical that she will go after pregnant Lady, but not too soon. That should give them some preparation time.
How she will do it? Trying to get Lady separated again or breaking the base? Must be ready for both cases. They could really use constant satellite surveillance in San Francisco area, because they would know right away when new Dark Matter portals will appear or something suspicious is going on. Using portals would be most convenient way to transport kidnapped. You get out from portal, take what you are after and then disappear fast. No risks on getting caught during escapade. And if she had inside help, then she could use them to break into the base. Possible.
He shared his thoughts with Taffer and Atticus and closed his eyes again. Time to fell back into healthy sleep. And he ordered really nice dream to watch. About girls...No way, he will do that. About one special girl. The one who slapped him and must be convinced that she is not a EGO psyche, but a real girl. And a really wonderful girl indeed. The one, whom Volodja really needs.
Still no sleep. Too much thinking kept him awake. And Erika seems to be worried about her children. Volodja somehow overheard Giant's proposal (thanks to Dinara, who informed Sophie, because for a teenage EGO psyche, she was really life wise and knew that Volodja as a counsellor, should know about that) and thought about that. Seeing real Kabule might scare that wannabe off, or make Cael to push him away even stronger, but if they don't succeed that shock therapy might fly back at their faces like a carelessly thrown boomerang, so he said: "Giant. We will try that one, but I'd suggest to wait until we are back in base. Just wake me up, when you do. I am still the closest thing to counsellor, we have."
Then he thinks about Raizar and realizes, that they could really use unleashed battle force. They had Atticus as a natural, but he was usually in control of his rage and Volodja himself was way too controlled and calculative and tend to hold Atticus back too. That can be usual fro most of times, but they won't perform well if real rage was needed. He was still too calm and Atticus's anger was TOO powerful. And Raizar was not a bad fellow anyway. But he was the one, who had to decide what is best for him, but he still said: "Raizar. You should consider that proposal to join officially, at least, but if you say "No" then you can always join us in the missions if you want. The choice is yours, of course. Nobody twists your arms."
Now he was ready to try again. Not the counselling job, but sleep. His conscious was clear now, but he needed unconsciousness. Time to dream about Sandy.

Raizar looked at Erika and answered seriously: "Thanks, mate. Kind words, so nice to hear. And about that proposition, you know, all this team thing is like a marriage, if you know what I mean. Bounds, duties... I had duties before. I used to be in squads and teams and... You know, I'm wandering since war is over and I'd better keep it this way. And roof above my head make me feel uneasy. It's good sometimes, for a change, but, you know, to awake in the morning and feel a wind and all those smells of grass and everything..." He scratched his head and continued: "But I think it would be good to work with you all again. Taffer already invited me to that base and I told him it would be good to have a backup place just in case. Anyway, thank you too. Now it's time to go. I'm sure they'll fix your children when we get there."
The return flight went smoothly. No one tried to attack the aircraft and Raizar sighed with relief when they reached their destination. He worried about possible attack which could be bad for their patients but their flight was peaceful this time. His passengers was absorbed in their own thoughts. Suddenly Volodja snapped out of his reverie and said: "Raizar. You should consider that proposal to join officially, at least, but if you say "No" then you can always join us in the missions if you want. The choice is yours, of course. Nobody twists your arms." Raizar snorted and answered. "Thanks mate. I'll think about it, don't you worry. By the way, nice picture of yours they have there in the Watering Hole. Last time I was there those big buddies used it as dart board. 'Not so pretty mug,' they said. 'Cheater', they said. I bought them a drink then." He grinned. "You know, mate, respect is something more than a couple of bruises. Especially when you have an enhanced body and they have not. Guess you still have some things to think about here."
The rest of the flight went on in silence except for small occasional talks about routine tasks.

"Poor fighters and sore losers. I didn't used a single EGO power on that brawl. Only my wits and every kind of breakable objects around. And they were bigger and stronger than me. And I was against them all alone, until I teamed up with Sarah. So I beat them fairly, without any advantages. And since Sarah is tough as nails, I already imagine, what their faces are used for," said Volodja peacefully. He will hear about the fate of those losers, when he ever returns to Freedom. It might be a really nice story to listen, while he drinks brandy at "The Watering Hole."

"Of course you did not. Except your reflexes are sharper, your hits are harder, your aim is more precise than anyone's. You got used to it and don't notice it but your opponents noticed it quite well. And I did not see any EGO jammers there. And what about Sarah? She is bartender, not your mom. Do you really think your songs charmed her enough to defend those memories about you risking to lose her customers? Huh. Really, sometimes using your smarts could prove useful, mate."

When both her children had fallen asleep, Erika made her way to the cockpit to see Taffer, but noted as she moved through the passenger compartment that Volodja and Raizar were having a tense conversation through the plane's intercom so she purposively interjected, "Excuse me gentlemen. I couldn't help but overhear your conversation. My opinion is at the end of the day of any battle, big or small, it is not the fighting style that matters, it is who is still standing at the end of it. Merely my opinion, and pardon me for interrupting your discussion."
Erika hoped that her brief interruption in their argument might cool it down, but that wasn't her main concern. She had taken Taffer's advice, and contacted some of her comrades in arms from the Pale Wars who still lived in the Collective's Capital City, and one, the commandant at the military academy there, had told her some information on a hailer call she received while waiting to arrive in San Francisco. Erika thought Taffer she should know as soon as possible.
As she moved into the cockpit, she said respectfully, "Excuse me Taffer, sir. Two items for your consideration. First, I've had quite a few years of administrative experience, and if you need someone to organize the day-to-day routines of the team's base, as Belle did, I would be glad to do it. In fact, I would relish the opportunity as it would give me something to keep me busy while the experts heal my children, since I will be of no use in that other than to get in the way. Second, one of my sources, an old soldier of the Pale Wars who I trust implicitly, has told me that the reason that the Inquisitors' headquarters is so hard to find is that it is located in a large stealth submarine which is always moving, and that the Inquisitors move around the world through a series of Dark Matter portals, the latter as we suspected. I just thought you should know."
Erika then moved back to the compartment where her children were located, sitting between them and holding each of their hands with one of her own as they slept.

Finally aircraft slowly went down and landed mildly at landing point. "So, ladies and gentlemen," Raizar said loudly. "We have reached a... an our destination. And if coords were right this is your home base. Unstrap your seatbelts if you have any and feel free to get up and then... hope you enjoyed the flight and so on. Thanks to you all mates, it was nice to work with you and it was nice to get into the pilot seat again... And we should thank this birdy for her hard work, yes. Am I right and I can go inside that base too? I mean, you do have a canteen, don't you? This pilot work is not easy you know, I think I could use some drink... and meal... before going to some own business."

Post by Lady Christianna on Apr 8, 2015 13:25:43 GMT
As the plane slowed upon landing, taxing into the hangar of the team base in San Francisco, Lady Christianna smiled enigmatically, happy to be home but sad that a road trip that had started innocently as a vacation had ended with one team mate presumed dead and another leaving the team for who knows how long. She knew she would personally miss them both, for despite Belle's inner monster, she and Vo were the steadying force in the team's often turbulent dynamics. Taffer was always the leader, but he had to stay aloof from the team in order to make the hard strategic decisions that made them an effective team, or so she supposed. Belle and Vo were the calming influence that made the team feel more like a family, and that would be missed immensely by her. She would especially miss Belle's warm smiles and Vo's lopsided grins that greeted her each new day.
Still, it was good to be home, and Lady knew the team would be ready for whatever awaited them in this new day.

Volodja opened his eyes. Dreams were beautiful actually, but seems that they were landed, so there was no point to keep dreaming there. Since Volodja had a season ticket bought, he continued to his apartment, in a hope for a replay for sweetest ones. He still needed a vacation from that damned vacation, bringing too many losses to the team and personal losses to him as well. But they saved their share of innocents and played a trick to the Mistress and Atticus will be entering into fatherhood soon.
Working days were about to begin and he must have his full strength back. "Shower and bed," he thought "And then I just read myself through from that pile I bought from Henry." Last chance for getting some leisure before another adventure begins, but compared with their holiday, all possible dangers ahead seemed to be so...distant and harmless. Back in his room Volodja changed himself into fancy red velvet robes, poured himself a glass of red wine, shook the glass, smelled and tasted. Hellish holidays were finally over.

"It's good to know you can be a co-pilot", Taffer answered to Atticus, "That means we have four pilots now, that's me, Raizar, Lady and you, so we can we can fly two aircrafts simultaneously. I think I'll catch some time to refine your and Lady's skills. And about Raizar… you know he's much more than just a merc. We've met back there in Dallas right after Pale Wars ended, it was like… 16 years ago, right? Yeah, I was about 15 back then and he was the first Votan I've met who didn't try to kill or imprison me. I learned a lot from him and probably he learned something about humans from me too. But you're right that you keep an eye on him. Things change from time to time, so we have to keep watch. That's why you're a head of Security here. So be it for now — a basic ID for him and a room if he needs one at the base. We'll see later.
I see your offer about making Cael confront a real Kabule as something that could really help and I'll keep that in mind, but I think I'll consult Doc Orion about their conditions first. Thanks for the offer anyway."
Later during the flight, Erika approached him with some information and the offer he was inclined to accept. "Thanks for the offer Erika", he replied, "I think you're the best candidature for this role given your experience. And if it makes you feel better, then it's even better this way."
The information Erika gave him made him give some serious thought to it. "A submarine then", he thought, "That one would be tough to find. Probably catching someone who's in the know could be easier. Or trick the Mistress into inviting us there. And we still don't know if their cloning facility is located on that submarine too or somewhere on the ground."
The aircraft landed and first people to meet on the ground were the medical crew headed by Dr. Orion himself who were ready to take Erika's son and daughter to the infirmary for assessment. Taffer shared with them the medical report and results of the scan he performed on mind control devices he took from the VBI facility.
Next person he met at the base was Chloe. She tried to smile to the team but Taffer read in her face she was conflicted between hitting him in the face or burst into tears. He approached her in silence and gave her a hug, letting her sob quietly on his shoulder.
"I know… I know it's not your fault Taffer", she whispered still sobbing, "you led them through the fight and you won, you rescued all those people, but why the fuck it had to happen that way? I still can't help but think of it, why? Why her, damn it?"
"I had exactly these thoughts Chloe", Taffer answered, stroking her red hair, "I had those many times. And now know what I think? There's no "why". No real reason. It just happens this way. All you can do is to clench your teeth and continue to live no matter what. Keep the team together. Finish what we had planned. Have fun with life damn it. Think on what she wanted us to do. That what kept me going those days when I lost the one I loved. I'm sorry, I'm not the best counselor in the world. And by the way, given you were her deputy, it makes you our main link to VBI now. That can be considered a promotion, right?"
"That's the worst promotion I've ever had", she answered gloomily.
"Some time ago you've asked me how I did get this "Captain" assignment, as you call it. Now you know how it feels".
"You're right", Chloe sighed, "I still have my team and a work to do. I'll be fine. How's Vo handling it?"
"Not too good I must say. Stayed there in search for her traces or her body or whatever clues he could find."
"That would be a real waste of a good hunk if he loses his head on all that", Chloe shook her head.
"He won't", Taffer replied with determination. "For what I know of him, we'll hear from him once he'll find something interesting or decides his search is over. I see you feel better already". He smiled, but his smile was still somewhat sad. She replied with similar smile. "Erika volunteered to take Belle's place in managing the base routines. So after we have some rest, I'll get her a quick tour on the base's ins and outs, you'd better have your briefing too, and then you'll be able to concentrate on your main job I think."
"Hey team", he waved to everyone. Let's go have some dinner. I'm sure the cook has something special for us.
