(co-worked with Taffer)
Daiden spent the rest of the time before landing in his room, counting his gains and losses. "Kshaa": unsolved. Ark history: unsolved. His family history: unsolved. Uncle... Daiden sighed wearily. Maybe he should do something here but big part of his soul died along with that ark and he did not see any nightmares anymore. Dead soul can't dream you know. And he was not sure it's worth digging up this story again. So, uncle: unsolved. What was next... ah, Volges and their strange activity. Unsolved. Seemed the crew just was not interested in solving any mysteries at all. Daiden thought he just misunderstood them. Where he could see a possibility to do some adventure they only saw a nice scenery for some love play. This trip was just a sort of marriage cortege so any adventures could only mess everything for them. So be it. Let this love boat swim the laughing sea of space, ships, stars, shoots, bombs, booms and diseases, while some lonely traveler just continues his journey. When ship landed, Daiden went to Taffer and asked him to spare a runner.
Taffer pulled one of the runners from the base's garage, but suddenly stoppe half-way and looked at Daiden.
"Daiden", he said, "There's one question that bugs me since we were on our way back. I't rather unusual, so please just don't answer if you find it inappropriate. All this mind-control towers business… I smell half-truth in it. I mean, it's totally possible that someone of your kind tried to "improve" your society this way, but I feel that your culture is based on something deeper than just some mind-controlling tech. Could you please shed some light on my suspicions?"
Daiden shrugged. "Maybe someone got crazy enough to develop some shitty devices but you are right about half-truths. I can smell it too. Our culture generally is based on our biology."
He turned and started to pace from one wall to another.
"You know, Castithans rely on androgenesis. Only male genes can be passed to the offspring. So only males responsible for the race's evolution. And male responsibility lies in male behaviour. If one behaves oneself according to his social status his children will get his behaviour in his genes. This how our genetic progression works. Misbehavior leads to genetic regression. And it can't be fixed with female genes as humans do. This is the foundation of the caste system. Male misbehavior must be rooted out immediatly to not to spoil the genetic line. I mean 'Marusha', compositions of rules and taboo which prevents a degradation. And women's misbehaviour is a disaster because bastards don't just blend a family genetic line, they break it completely. If bastard is born from the male of inappropriate caste he will be out of his place, he can't behave himself accordingly because this is not in his genes and this will end with a outcasting or worse. Do you really think this caste system needs some devices to maintain? Our biology maintains it. This is how evolution works, both biological and social. And because of that this Thorn Liro is a piece of shit. They try to violate not only a social structure but a biology itself. If they succed our race could degrade severely. Or this could end with creation of a new social structure, maybe this will not be called a caste structure but some "social layers" or such but it will be strict as well. Because biology dictates it. We are not humans, you know. One has not to be so anthropocentric when one tries to understand other's culture."
"Thank you Daiden", Taffer nodded, "I expected something like this. But there's one more thing I think of. You know, your society ended up in a completely different environment now. So there's a possibility that old rules you formed while living in Votanis system may not be applicable to the conditions you experience now. Maybe Thorn Liro has some point too, breaking old rules and trying to find new ones. I think only time will tell who's right. With all that you told me I think several generations may pass before one could determine the winner in this race. Anyway, thank you for your sincerety."
Daiden nodded. "Yes, only time can tell. But I don't believe they could do something with it. Anyway I doubt I'll live long enough to see any changes so I'll just continue to do what I think I should do. Thank you too, you are trying to understand something at least."
He did not say goodbye to anyone except Haele. He packed his shiny armor, put on his tattered veteran rags, went to the hangar and rolled out his ATV to the terrain. It was so nice to breathe fresh wind after the motionless artificial air of the ship even if this wind was full of dust, it was alive after all. Gray wastes of San Francisco now looked almost pleasant to Daiden. Vast land where he is free to go wherever he wants, what more could he want? He smiled slightly and gave full throttle enjoying every moment of free driving. So, again, it is time to search. For what? He did nor figure it out yet. Mysteries to solve? Battles to fight? Worlds to save? He did not know where he was heading now but maybe if he drove far enough he will find what he's seeking.
He was at a good distance from the ship when EGO translated a distant voice into his head:
"Daddy leaving? Lexy sad. Lexy wish luck to daddy! Daddy returns?"
Daiden smiled and whispered "Maybe, Lexy. Maybe."
Bye!
